These kind of questions scare me. If you have to ask this then you are NOT prepared for this area. Some days walking to your mailbox might be a challenge. Not trying to be mean, just hope people are safe and prepared. Check out the number of people who freeze to death every year in this state. Heck, look what happened to the UND hockey player last year. He almost lost his foot from a few minutes of exposure.

Ok I don't try to sound mean at all and you guys know that I really appreciate every comment and tips you post in this forum about the boomtown. There are people that is gonna come to find a job regardless of the weather, each person , each family will have their own personal reason to do it. We know is gonna be cold. We know it might take some time before we get a job even tho there are opening evywhere in the boomtown. We know housing is a problem. Let's move on.
Having said that, can you guys give us advice on how to prepare for the cold, freezing weather? We understand some locals might be worried about our well being, and some others just don't like out of staters. We don't wanna go to North Dakota because we like the cold weather. We are going because we want to work.
I've done my research on how to protect my self from the winter North Dakota style.
Give us tips on how to protect from the weather. Don't discourage us. God Bless.

Dress in layers and give er hell jax. I like the attitude but we are just being realistic. People like u will make it but many others need to stay away til spring. I hired 2 guys today that just rolled in from salt lake that showed up with a camper, found a parking spot, and have an get er dun attitude like yours. Most won't be so lucky.

This is very true it is like when your mother tells you what to and not to do, but sometimes it goes in one ear and out the other. But this is not some winter mountain expedition anyone is taking, this is plain and simple to get a job and work and make money. It is amazing when you understand that what you can handle. This is also the unknown since many here don't have the job yet and it can be scary. But like anything in life when you are prepared whether it is for the weather or getting the job, you will be further ahead than the ones who aren't prepared.
It is true if you are not use to this weather you need to educate yourself on it, but I also remember being from California and showing up in Alaska I adapted very easy and didn't freeze. I was very prepsred of course you need the basic snow jackets, gloves, hat and boots. Don't fall asleep outside and don't get lost in the wilderness and you will be fine, lol...Oh ya, don't drive fast and don't brake hard as well .....And I would def not show up without a car that is scary and not sure if there are shelters there......Are there shelters there?

I wouldnt worry about chains for tires.... I have never seen them used at least here in the eastern part of the state and northwest Minnesota.
Maybe if you are headed to a job site that is remote or hilly....but nothing I would purchase beforehand. Regular all season tires are fine for basic road conditions.

I went today to get a snow tire(only 1 at atime, lol)and I told the guy I wanted studs in it and he lectured me it is not legal here in Minnesota so I said forget it. He said he thinks it is legal in "the Dakotas" is it? These to me are gold in the winter for a car. I have AWD but still feel better with them.
