Hey,

I'm thinking of moving to Minot (or surrounding area). I have a cruddy background check which makes it impossible to get work where I am (however I have no felonies). I do have a university degree, however.

I have no car and little money, and I don't have the background to secure employment before I get there. So I'll need to just get off the bus with a backpack and tent and go from there, until I can get some employment. I know it'll be warm until october or so, and I figure that will be enough time to get situated.

In what city(s) would this be possible? Any advice, thoughts or help would be appreciated.

Thanks
Jekster

Minot has a public transportation system - but it doesn't operate very late - plus its rental prices are much lower now when you can afford it.

Some of the smaller towns might work because nearly the entire town is walkable: Tioga, Stanley, Crosby. But those towns have fewer retail and restaurant options for jobs.

Buy a cheap bike and you should be fine until October. October would require a very good sleeping bag.

Others have done it. Some are successful. Make sure you have money to get home with just in case. It is at least warm weather. I strongly suggest the larger towns, more options w/ jobs, and being able to get somewhere, even if you're walking. Small towns seem to have less big stores and easy to get jobs and seems most folks are driving to the oil fields.
You could always do that later after you get a line on things.
Be safe and be careful. If you do this, I wish you success.

You should be able to find job opportunities by looking online. A lot of companies that operate in North Dakota use online listings or their own website to post jobs. There's also BisManOnline - Free Classifieds, which I used to find my first job when I moved here from Wisconsin. They have a separate category on the site for employment listings and you can also post for work wanted, which was pretty helpful for me.
