Default kenosha/racine area trivia

what are some things about kenosha/racine that only locals would know? things that i cant see from looking up stats.

stuff i would say about my town might be that theres a sign shaped like a pig on ash street, or theres a one-eyed begger at the corner of main and stratford. or that the convenience store down by the lake sells cambodian candy bars. or that the south end has a huge maltese population and smells like stuffed peppers.

all the above is made up, but that gives you an idea of what im looking for...but true things about kenosha/racine and area

I'm not a Racine native, but I know that Racine claims to have the largest Danish community in North America outside of Greenland.

I spent my first 37 years in Racine (except four in the military). I escaped Wisconsin in 79. Racine has a number of things you are looking for: One is that "Kewpies" has the best hamburgers in town. It is downtown and has been there since the 50's (that I personaly know of). The river that runs though Racine is the "Root river" ("Kipikawi" in the native American tounge) Yes lots of Danes there. (I am one) Kringle is the Danish pastry of record in Racine! The "Mitchel" automobile was manufatured in Racine long ago. "Horlicks Malted milk" was made there also. Park HIgh School was the best school and was referred to as "The 12th street zoo" by the jerks that attended Horlick............<GRIN> now that should engourage some further responses.

Kenosha has a large Italian population and Tenutas grocery and liquor store is one of the best this side of NYC.It's not to be expected in such a blue collar town, but anything and everything Italian.

Default Kenosha

hmmm, interesting topic! Well in Kenosha we have a very old lady that walks the city streets in weird clothes and will attack you if you look at her! She walks all over the city. Most people that have been here awhile know about her. The Kemper Center is said to be haunted here. We refer to the Illinois people as FIBs...cant say what that means on this board, it's rude I apologize to any Illinois people that read that, but it is true. The downtown area is filled with crazy people because of the halfway house we call the Dayton Hotel. Lots of interesting characters, indeed! There is a HUGE pot smoking population. There is also a pretty good size suicide rate especially the past few years at Indian Trails academy. We refer to our town as K-Town or Kenowhere. You can watch free movies at the outdoor theater if you camp out in the woods behind the parking lot and if you don't get caught! We are proud of our many many many bars. The Spot is is the best burger joint around. Never Never go to the restaurant on the corner of 60th and 22nd, it is infested with roaches!!! White caps neighborhood is kind of ritzy but the homes are built VERY cheaply. Don't try to start a new small business in this town, it is not a very successful town for that. It is a rather interesting little town

Wow, browsing through old threads and I come across a post by selenamarie about a very old lady that walks the city street in weird clothes that will attack you if you look at her. Don't think I've ever heard of her actually attacking anyone but this is something you would only know from living here. Does anyone actually know who she is???

I don't know who she is just a little about her. I have heard that she kinda went crazy after her husband died, years ago. She just started walking and walking for some reason. Sad. Don't know if that is true or not. She usually doesn't attack people on a regular basis, but she has been known to do so. She started yelling at me and threw her purse at me when I said hello to her. LOL I have heard of others that she has talked to without attacking them but they said that she didn't make alot of sense. I feel sorry for her and actually kinda worry about her. I haven't seen her walking around the city lately.

She has caused such curiosity among people that I have heard that some have tried to follow her to see where she walks to (probably scared the hell out of the poor lady!) She may be old, but she is feisty and has out-walked everyone who tried as far as I know. LOL Hope she is ok!!!

I've seen her walking down 30th just north of 52nd in the last 2-3 weeks so she's obviously still ok. She probably gets bothered by a number of people as everyone seems to know who she is. It must really suck for her, I imagine she just wants to be left alone.

Why was Park High School called "The 12th street zoo" by students at Horlick High if it was such a good school?
