Default Moving up there from FL (no not crazy)

My husband just got word he is relocating to WI and was given the choice of counties he can represent. I wondered if you all could give me the good and bad about these counties:

Green Lake
Calumet
Manitowoc
Sheboygan
Green (without the lake)
Kewaunee
Marquette
Waupaca
Waushara

We are lucky to get to choose because of my husbands seniority and I was hoping you all could help me decide. A little about us. I have three boys in elementary and middle school. My oldest son is in gifted education here. We love the outdoors and I grew up in the north so I can handle snow (as long as I have a fluffy blanket and hopefully a fireplace). My husband likes to ski (downhill and cross country) and the kids are excited about sledding prospects. If we can find a place with land I might want to have chickens and goats. Hope some of you have some replies to this since I am really nervous about uprooting my family into the great unknown.

No not really, I have only been "Up North" once or twice here myself. Do you want more of a smaller town size like Waupaca or a bigger city size like Sheboygan?

I guess if I want to do outdoorsy type of things I would try to go as north as possible. There is a great ski hill near Rib Mountain Granite Peak Ski Area.

I don't like the look of Manitwoc or Sheboygan but that's me.

Although Green County is nice they have more rolling hills and Tyrol Basin ski area.

I would use google street view to see which areas are more appealing to you then research them more.

They told him today he could go to Jefferson. How about... are any of the counties I listed less desirable when it comes to safety and family friendliness?

Do NOT move to Leechburg PA. Closed minded people. Police not interested in enforcing city laws, wanna burn trash - leaves go ahead. They even burn car seats and plastic and no one does anything. Some blantent fraud and they look the other way and come down on you when you point it out. Dogs run free to scare and bark at people. Snow removal only burries your car. Kids don't want to go to school - let them stay home and play outside! Wanna get ride of 8 bags of trash - no prob. Don't pay for extra trash stickers or bags for leaves - city employees look the other way. No chance of having a decent life or community. Kids are allowed to harrase the old people and destroy anything outside, Dogs bark all day and night. Please for your own good move elsewhere - anywhere would be better than trying to make a simple, decent life in Leechburg. A bunch of inbreed, selfish, ignorant, walfare, greedy, nasty, lice filled people.

I clearly indicated Wisconsin in my post.... not sure why someone would be posting info on not moving to some city in PA on the WI forum. But Regretful if it makes you happy I will NOT move to Leechburg... you have my word on it.

Okay, I moved here 30 years ago from Coastal S.C., and I'd say you are anything BUT crazy.

Am familiar with most of the counties you have listed.

My take: supported by stats (in part- crime rate- education) and opinion in part:

Manitowoc Co.:

Start of the more rural part of Lake Michigan shoreline- but no-way is considered, 'Up North.'

Industrial area with a strong AG and tourism sector.

As with most industrial areas, it's been hit hard by free trade policies (cannot compete with 30-cent per hour labor), but it does have a boat-building industry that at times does boom.
Low crime; good education.

Kewaunee Co.:

Just North of Manitowoc Co. More rural, quieter. Right now, they seem to be doing worse- in terms of economy- than anywhere in the region/state except for perhaps places like Kenosha and Janesville- when it comes to industrial jobs.
However, AG is stronger there, and it is more picturesque, and located next to Door Co, which is a big tourist draw.

Local school just had to change its mascot name, but still provides excellent elementary/secondary ed system.

Waupaca: Just West of the Fox Valley. More rural than any place near the Lake, and colder/warmer (depending upon season), also as a result of not being near the water. Small industry and heavy Ag-based economy. Fair by Wisconsin standards, as far as unemployment rate/crime goes. But still way better (lower rates of unemployment and (esp.) crime) that your statistical American town. Lots of people commute to Appleton- about 40 miles East.

Waushara:
For some reason their stretch of I-39 (the main N.-S. route for Central Wisc.) is always poorly plowed/icier than are stretches North or South (that's an opinion).

Same scene as for Waupaca- only sub-in Oshkosh for Appleton.

Hopes this information helps.

I just wanted to put in a vote for Sheboygan County. I am not familiar with all of the counties you listed, but I really like Sheboygan and know people from there who say it is very family friendly. Check out the area and take a tour of Kohler. (very cool) The location is nice because it is only about an hour to Milwaukee so you can take advantage of the things you may need from a big city, while living in a smaller communtiy. I hope this helps.
