Ah yes, the 70-300. I got the Sigma 70-300. I love it. I don't have any vibration reduction either. I find that proping up against a tree or down on 1 knee helps. If I'm hiking through the woods, I find the tripod to be cumbersome.

Yeah, same here, tree works good in a pinch. I have a couple of tripods, a wooden one, pretty heavy and an aluminium one. I'm not to crazy about taking the aluminium one when it's cold, the last one I had snapped while I was trying to adjust it. I think the temp was around zero.
Mine has vibration reduction, or image stablization, two modes, one for vertical stablization and the other for all around.
I worked on rigging up a monopod today, I'll have to see how it works tomorrow.

No wonder you guys get great shots! I remember helping Ray lug stuff, then I'd take a book and go off and read somewhere because he'd take forever just for one shot! Most of the time he preferred to be alone and I can't say that I blamed him. He ended up marrying a photographer, which does make sense!!!

Saw pictures of a cougar on WBAY news this a.m.! I thought of you guys! A couple of awesome shots, wonder how close he was or type of camera. The cougar was up a tree and quite big, not a youngster!
The news reporter commented on how good the picture was and there would be no way he'd be there! I think they said in NW Wisconsin, Spooner maybe???

All of my picture are taken in central Wisconsin, Waupaca county. We have a chain of lakes with eighteen connected lakes plus another sixty or so lakes ranging from a few acres to a couple of hundred acres in size.
I missed the shot of the year this morning. Two bear cubs hightailing it across the woods. I caught a glimpse of one first, didn't really know what it was. I thought it might have been a turkey or a big raccoon. A couple of seconds later the second one went running thru, I got a better look at that one but it only last a few seconds in the opening. No time for a shot.

I saw that too, it was in Spooner, way up north. I guess they were trying to dart it so they could put a tracking collar on it.
