Any info on Two Rivers/Manitowoc for a possible newbie?
My husband is in the Coast Guard and it is highly possible that we will be stationed in Two Rivers, WI in the next few months. I have been doing research and so far I have come to the conclusion that Two Rivers is very small and quaint and Manitowoc is bigger but still quaint. From what I've read, they both seem pretty safe to live in. I have a 17 month old child and I just want a place that will be safe for him, but will also hold my interest. We live in South Carolina now and HATE IT!!!! I am a true yankee and was born and raised in Ohio and can't wait to move back up north! Can any of you PLEASE give me the dirt on these two cities. From what I've gathered, we would probably live in Manitowoc. Is it really safe for kids? I know there will be lots of snow, but I did live in upstate NY for awhile so I know all about lots and lots of snow. I'm not too concerned with that. However are these towns really small? Like is there Wal-Mart or Applebee's or a mall there? I don't want to have to drive an hour to go shopping. Also, what part of town should I look to rent in? Please anyone that can help with ANY info, I would truly appreciate it!!

Out of Two Rivers and Manitowoc, I'd pick Manitowoc to live personally. I grew up about 20 minutes from there and my family lives in Manitowoc now. They have everything a city needs, good stores, great places to eat, etc. There is a restaurant called Four Seasons that is our favorite place to eat! Manitowoc is safe and quiet for the most part. If looking for a place to live, I'd stay away from the down town area. Not that its really bad, but the outside area of Manitowoc are alot nicer. My family loves it there and my husband and I are looking to move to Wisconsin in about 3 years and we cant wait to get back! Good luck!

Moving to manitowoc/Two Rivers
We are living in Manitowoc and have also lived in Two Rivers. I think you will be happy with either. "Manty" is 34,000 and "Trivers" is 12,000. They are 6 short miles apart. Manty has your superWalmart and an Applebees. No really good "mall" shopping in either town. Locals drive to Appleton (45 miles), huge mall, or Green Bay (35 miles). Schools are good and both towns are clean and safe. Really kind of undiscovered gems along Lake Michigan.
I prefer the north side of both towns for living but there really are no "bad" areas. Due to factories closing there are many homes for sale at reasonable prices. Churches of most denominations are available. The Manty/TR YMCA is awesome and located right on the lakeshore. Lots of activities for kids in the area year-round.
For a smaller area there are quite a few cultural activities. There is the restored Capitol Civic Center, the Rahr-West Museum, the Manitowoc Symphony and the Lakeshore Wind Ensemble( a concert band) just to name a few. Also The UW-Manitowoc 2-year campus and Silver Lake College (4-year). Both cities have fairly new libraries and share materials county-wide. And despite popular opinion not eveyone is a brat-eating, beer guzzling idiot!
Welcome to the Lakeshore!

Thanks for the positive posts! I'm buying a house in Two Rivers and hope to be moving there eventually. Unfortunately I live in a seniors mobile home park and mobile homes are a tough sell in a good market and right now things are not good! :-( I'm only 140 miles away so I can manage two places for awhile but I don't really want to do that for too long.
I've been back and forth to the area alot, stayed for weekends and really like what I see. I chose Two Rivers because I can walk around town for things I need, I'm blocks from the lake, beach, park and grocery store. Nice being next to Manitowoc, too for Lowes, Wal-Mart, etc.
Originally I started looking in western Illinois, then along I-80 but the small towns didn't have alot and I would be constantly driving 15-20 miles, not a good thing. Also I have always lived within a few miles of Lake Michigan and realized I could not give up the lake.
I've done my homework and think the Manitowoc/Two Rivers area is great!

I was born and raised in a small town about 1/2 hour south of "Manty". I recently drove through both towns on the way up to the wonderful, fabulous place that is door county, wisconsin. I see that alot of downtown renovation has been going on, especially manty - cute shops, cafes, etc. The lakeshore is awesome. Your little boy will love the submarine museum that is in Manty as well. If you are coming very soon, book your fall weekend (October) to Door County. It is about a 2 hour drive away and it is great. I envy you with the "pumpkin farms" and apple picking that you can take hay rides with your family during the fall. ENJOY...You will soon be calling yourself a Cheesehead! Welcome...can't wait to get back.
