Hello everyone
Hello all,
I just stumbled across this forum a few days ago and thought it might be a good place to hang out.
I am currently living in the suburbs of Chicago, but I'm planning on moving to the great northwoods in the very near future. I was introduced to northern Wisconsin when I was a teenager and fell in love with the area. I told myself that someday I would be living up there. Well, it seems that someday may finally be arriving. My youngest daughter will be out of high school in a few years and we have decided to make a break for it. I was wondering if anyone here is from the Antigo area. When I first started going to Wisconsin, we went to a lake outside of Townsend and I thought it was a great place but too small to find any work in. Antigo seems to be the closest "big town" so I thought I would look there first.
Anyway, thanks for reading this and I hope to hear from you all very soon.
Take care
Don

Hello
I came to northern Wisconsin as a 5 year old, but went back and forth to visit my dad in a far north suberb. Some of my fam is still there but I stayed up north and love it!! My sister also lives in WI and my oldest brother is moving back soon. I perfer the small towns and live about 25 miles from 3 larger towns. This is not a bad drive to go to work or shop. I recently moved to Ogema--tiny but nice! There are many lakes and federal forests, county and state lands and parks near by.

Well, I just wanted to know how things are up there these days. Do you like it? Would you recommend living there? I was very impressed with the town when I went through there many years ago.
Thanks for responding.

Welcome! I'm not in the Antigo area but thought I'd say "hi" as a recent transplant from Illinois! :-)
I lived in Illinois all my life (Evanston, Mundelein, Park City (Waukegan) and really intended to stay. I liked where I lived but the area got too rough to handle. I looked alot in Illinois (towards Galena, Sterling/Rock Falls, Ottawa, Byron, etc.) but I've been near the lake the last 35 years and didn't want to give it up. Everyone scared me about Wisconsin (taxes). I paid $ 1,900. real estate taxes, I live on a corner, not a huge house, 3 bedrooms, basement, story and a half, nice deck, newer garage (2 cars easily). Lot of garages in town are very small. I didn't think 1,900. was bad at all.
Two Rivers is 12,500 I really like it. I love being able to walk to the grocery store, bank, drug store, plus I'm just blocks from the lake. Manitowoc is right nearby and has the bigger stores. Two Rivers supports 2 department stores, 2 groceries, banks, credit unions Waukegan couldn't support a Pick n Save that opened, closed in less than 10 yrs.
Sorry for rambling doesn't help for your area but wanted to let you know my experience has been pleasant and I'm on my own. No spouse, family or friends in the area, just a cold turkey move and I've done fine. Start researching, visit the area (alot), check out local newspapers online, and happy hunting!

Hi Susan,
Thanks for your reply. I don't think $1,900 is too bad either. The taxes on a lot of the houses I've looked at in Wisconsin have been less than what I'm paying now. ($3,700 for 1,700 sq. ft.)
You have a lot of courage to go in cold. I'm glad it worked for you. I've thought about going up cold but don't know if I could do it. One way or another, I'll find a way to get up there.
Thank you for your help.
Don
