I just have to mention, this is why I like participating on this board . I find it interesting the stuff that I grew up with and don't even give a moments thought is so new and different to someone else! When I was growing up I think the only times we ever went in or out of the front door was for a) Halloween trick or treaters and b) hauling the Christmas tree in and out. Next door to us was a duplex, with the upper flat's "front" door being in the back, so even the mail carrier and the paper boy would just cut across the driveway go to our back door.
Maybe I've been here too long... I think I was in high school before I even realized that not everyone used a "bubbler"

I agree! It's even better when people don't automatically assume that the way that other people do things is wrong. We've been wonderfully pleased with the people in Waupun - actually the people in all of the areas of Wisconsin that we've visited except for Madison.

At our place in Tacoma exactly one of the people that we knew used the back door by preference - and that was because his original route to our house was through the alley and the back door was the easiest to get to.
Stopping to think of that - I don't know that I've seen an alley in Waupun???!!! Not a problem for me, but very different than Tacoma or Seattle.

Oh no, you don't! It's not polite to throw out a reference like that without give us newbies some idea of what you're talking about

You are in a rather rural area. Alleys are very common in the city of Milwaukee and in some of the inner suburbs within the county. I don't know specifically but I wouldn't be surprised if they were in the older areas of places like Racine or Kenosha.

The Kohler company made a drinking fountain called a Bubbler and the name kind of stuck... it's like how the company name Kleenex has become the common term for a tissue.

That's right! My relatives in Milwaukee had alleys. They're in the older urban areas.

Alleys
Yeah, I think alleys overall are becoming a thing of the past. You'll find them commonly around the older areas of Milwaukee, Glendale, Greendale, etc., however, it seems that in new development and construction, alleys are becoming a relic.
I had an alley growing up and I loved that alley! (Great place for a kid to play basketball, etc.).

I just wanted to post and say this thread was a great read. We're relocating to Wisconsin in about 3 weeks... we're actually going up north (Ashland) but it was still nice to read about the state in general. There are a lot of wonderfully helpful people here!
Good luck to you momandwife, I'll send you some snow when I get there.

I have many relatives in Naperville or in nearby areas and it is very nice. The western suburbs will have pretty much anything you need. When we are down there I sometimes get annoyed at the weekend traffic on Route 59 or on Naperville Road but I suppose coming from Southern California it's no big deal! We'll allow you go to Illinois instead only if you promise to come and visit Milwaukee on a nice summer day

Adam! How are you?
Yes, as you mentioned, we are used to traffic here in California and we always try to avoid it. I really dislike traffic, who doesn't, right?
We did our search about Naperville and we just loved everything about it! There were no doubts whatsoever and the feeling about our decision is great!
