Texas highway would be the first to allow 85 mph speed limit | The Lookout - Yahoo! News

This would be great! Imagine how convenient when heading to the Dells or twin cities!!!

I really hope, now that Walker has a mandate, we should be seeing 70 mph on the interstates through WI but 85 mph toll roads this would be a dream come true!

I'm not really sure Walker winning would correlate with higher speed limits.

The way people drive here, an 85 mph speed limit would be a nightmare. Plus given the weather, 1) it would not be usable to full potential in winter and 2) would be too hard to maintain for safe use at those high speeds.

not to mention trying to keep semis at a more reasonable speed (doesnt seem to work when you cross into IL) and in one lane. I can understand some form of hi speed access, if drivers are trained, if cars are capable, and if the roads and conditions warrant. I could just see flying 85 mph and cresting a hill to hit the brakes due to one of the many summer backups by the dells... and hopng everyone else can do the same... lol

That would be fun but too expensive when you have to fill up. I'm fine doing about 75 between here and Chicago

I've driven quite a bit in Texas. I've driven quite a bit in Wisconsin. An 85mph speed limit would only catch up to what people are already doing. An 85mph speed limit would mean certain 100mph drivers. Going that fast in the average car (minivan.. suv...pickup) with the average driver is frightening. Very few drive autobahn-worthy BMW's and the like or have the skills to drive that fast. We would need to significantly ramp up our driver education programs and require stringent safety inspections.

Montana does it...

I think the key is hard-line enforcement with high fines. I was pulled over for 83 in an 80 on I-10 near Junction.

people go 85 mph on rush hour in that area already.. I think raising it to maybe 70 is good enough for now. Having it lower benefits in that it keeps semis going slower (usually)

I'd rather they spend money on roads vs public transit but that's me, I prefer the freedom of a car. When they were repaving I 90/94 from the Dells they should have made it 3 lanes each way all the way to where 90 and 94 split off.... in particular around the Dells and south they could really use the 3 lanes.

Speed limit is 75 on our interstates and the average speed is about 82, but it's all flat and straight. I don't personally think people need to be going 90-100 or more but meh, I'm also in favor of more personal freedoms so if they wanted to raise the limits on rural interstates I'm not going to scream against it.

Why would you say that? I drive 80-90mph everyday in Michigan. Similar weather as Wisconsin.
