looking for a safe place to hike and fish along a river where we can set up a camp anywhere we stop at, a two or three day father and son trip for beginners in mid to northern illinois or lower wisconsin. can anyone help me?

hmmmm....that is a tough one... Hike along a river? Not going to work along the Mississippi or any other local river. Now if you had a canoe or kayaks, lots of options.

I would say you are out of luck mostly because river banks in this area are so thick, a lot of the land is private and there aren't many (any?) established hiking trails.

Maybe try biking?

I would say to check out the Kickapoo River, great for canoeing I hear and Wildcat Mountain is not far away.

Check out the Ice Age Trail, just in case it goes along a river at some point...
