Not so much scared of critters as I've had issues with coyotes and stray dogs. We had a dog killed by a coyote and strays jump over our little 3 foot fence and attack our goat ;( Once the taller fence went up no more problem. I like leaving the kitchen door open and letting the little one and dog go in and out. And I have gotten an occasional squirrel in the house As for why so many people have dogs I have no answer other then maybe to say they got a dog. But back to the fence it's really a security thing with all the things that happen now a days. One can never have to many precautions.

Wisconsin is a little bit sheltered (thankfully, in my opinion) from the constant fear of crime and bad situations in general compared to how pervasive it has become in most places. Fences are unusual, people leave their cars unlocked (or running), kids are free to run around the neighborhood, etc.

I have to agree, many of my neighbors leave there windows down. Doors unlocked. This is in Middleton. I feel safe here, although I still lock my stuff because once folks become to comfortable it's easy for them to become targets. For the most part I consider Wisconsin to be a safe state.

I think it's due to the neighborliness of most of Wisconsin. if someone DOES put up a fence, the neighbors probably look down on them, thinking "Well. I guess they don't want to be friendly."

A lot of the fences I've seen in Wisconsin are low, wood-slat picket type of fences that are just enough to keep the doggies in. The kind that doesn't give off the sense of being an ominous barrier.

This is a really interesting thread to me because my girlfriend from CA said the same thing about MI when we lived there. Wisconsin is the same, of course, as is most of the Midwest. It is definitely a regional thing. In my opinion it's a good thing. I remember running over to the neighbor's as a kid to play with the other neighborhood kids. My parents knew almost everyone who lived in our subdivision and I knew all the kids. Fences are nice for privacy but lots here are usually big enough that you don't need one.

I was thinking the same as mrs cool and goblu. After living in Az and Calif, I find it to be a nice little break, no need. People pretty much know their property lines. I like that you dont feel like youre living in a prison, with 6 ft high walls blocking the view. I love the midwest!

Be grateful there's no fences up there!!!

I have never adjusted to living here in "Wall City", coming from MN, and I want out! Next year! Can't take it anymore, all these ominous, omnipresent cinder block walls, every house has to have them, 6 foot high walls surrounding the backyard. And they can be deathtraps! A senior citizen, falls down, breaks a hip, no one to witness it! You walk the streets here, and it's nothing but canyons and canyons of walls! If you were mugged, stabbed on one of these streets, even during the day time, where are the witnesses!!!

Why the secrecy????? What are they all hiding?????

Thank God Las Vegas has the potential for a strong earthquake some day, and then? Down comes the walls, Jack and Jill and all!

I would love a little white picket fence that would work great... Just enough to keep our little French bulldog and kiddo in.. " And ocasional ball from Rollin into the street "
