Are you saying that you couldn't find a black salon in Milwaukee? Center Street is 10 blocks of almost nothing but salons.

Default Huh ?

I'm so glad that you found someone that is professional and knows how to deal with ethnic hair.

I'm not African American, but I moved here (Niagara, Wisconsin.. that's 100 miles north of Green Bay) over 7 years ago. You'd be really hurting if you had moved here. I doubt I see 10 black people in a year here.

If I want my hair braided I have to let my daughter do it and I have to do hers.

Whoever mentioned the hot combs.. please, please, please tell me this wasn't the old iron type that you heat over an open flame and then apply to your hair.. for the love of Gawd.. tell me that nobody does that anymore.. It burns and breaks off your hair.. and nobody that I know uses that barbaric thing anymore.

Every time we go shopping in Green Bay, my kids and myself want to hug every black person we see.. because we.. being from the south.. feel culturally deprived. There is no such thing as soul food up here, unless I make it myself. People up here turn their noses up at shrimp and grits... they don't know how to cook collards or turnips or parsnips.. and I've been living here deprived of all my ethnic girlfriends in Georiga for the last 7 years. (you should see my phone bill) LOL

Count yourself lucky to live in Green Bay.. where at least when you walk down the street you get a diversity of color and cultures..

That said.. I personally can't get back to the south fast enough..

I have however learned a great deal about the UP of MIchigan.. but mostly, they are just a different type of red neck.. LOL

There are several referrals on this site to the Lamanz Hair Salon in Appleton. I had an appointment yesterday and I am very pleased. My hair dresser was Julius, he gave me instuctions on how to take care of my hair between appointments, did not cut it all off, did not pile on the services. I had worn braid and hair weaves for three years so my hair was a mess. I eft feeling great about the service and my hair. I had been driving from Rhinelander to Milwaukee, going to LaManz takes an hour and a half off my driving time. Finally a real winner.

LaManz in Appleton is good place ask for Carla or Julius. I live in Rhinelander and use to drive 4 1/2 hours to Milwaukee. This meant I wore my hair braided most of the time. Now i can get my relaxers, color and cut regularly. The shop is clean and professional and located in the City Centre. You should give them a try.
