HELP! Looking for Good Black Salons in Wisconsin. THIS IS SERIOUS!
I just moved to Wisconsin from the south. As some of you may know, as an African American female, I NEED TO HAVE A GOOD BLACK BEAUTICIAN.
Where are the best black salons in Wisconsin?
I'm living in Green Bay, but willing to travel a few hours. I know there's not more than 2% blacks in Green Bay, but I still asked around here and no one knows where I can go. And most of the African Americans I've seen don't really seem to comb their hair.
PLEASE HELP! I can't get use to this.
Thanks.

There are more African Americans living in Milwaukee than there are people living in Green Bay.
All I around me I see beautiful Black women with the most perfectly-coifed hair, but for some reason I've never ventured to ask where they've had theirs done.
I do know that in my part of town there are a plethora of small independently owned Black salons.
I also know that many of the Green Bay Packers players frequent some well-known barber shops for men, places like Brew City Barbering and Gee's Clippers.
I figure if the Packers make the trip to Milwaukee regularly for hair care (and soul food) then their wives must do the same.

I think the same...that the few Black residents of Green Bay that there are, probably go to Milwaukee for GOOD beauty shops, salons and soul food. Although, this would probably be a good market to start something like this in.
NE Wisconsin is one of the most homogeneous places in the country, well at least until the last five years with a dramatic increase in Hispanics.
Other than Milwaukee, which I can't imagine is more than a few hours away, try Racine then down to Chicago. Take advantage and make the monthly trek into shopping excursions too...that way you won't be going so far just to get one thing done. Let us know what you decide!

I was thinking the same thing. If I could run into a football player out here that would be GREAT. Like you said, I know some of them have black women in their lives that have to get their hair done. The can't all be their own Kitchenticians.

So basically you need someone who can work with black hair? Are there any colleges around where you are at? I would look around there and see. The young like to look good.
As for finding a black beutician, not sure you are going to have luck.
You may want to look into where the hispanics go too if there is a significant population. Hispanics are a mix of alot of races pretty much, and go the range from "white" hair to "black" hair even in immediate family.

That's a great idea Cain. However, I haven't really seen any hispanics. If I have to ask them if they're hispanic, then we don't have the same kind of hair.
Thanks any how. But keep the ideas coming. This is a big issue for me.

You may be benefited by going into some of the salons and just asking them if they handle alot of hair types like yours. If they have regulars, see about speaking with them.
If you look at me, you would need to ask if I was hispanic, and not because I am very light

Another newcomer
I just moved to Oxford, Wisconsin from Springfield, Illinois. I haven't had a perm or any other hair care in a year. Did you find out where to go? Please share what you have learned. This goes beyond serious. Help a sister out; Please!

For the Green Bay resident, the only real way you're going to figure this out is to ask a stylist and not that this is a good place to go but I bet they know some answers would be Martins school of cosmetology on W. Mason.
Or try calling Wonders, green bay spa and salon, or Minerva's, supposedly they are the top 3 salons in Green Bay, they surely would know where to go I bet. Also there is something on Broadway st. in Green Bay that the owner came from New York city so maybe she knows where to go. Just use the tools you have in front of you and you'll find what you're looking for.
Also, almost 10% of Green Bay's population is Hispanic and there isn't a day that goes by that I don't see a number of Hispanic people anywhere I go so I'm not really buying the I don't see them.

My family attended a conference this weekend for white couples who've adopted black children. A black woman did a session on hair care. She brought in her three children to demonstrate. The childrens' hair as well as her hair was beautiful. She has a salon in Appleton and I am thinking of bringing my daughter there to get her hair braided. We live in the Racine area so we have plenty of choices here. However, I've yet to find a salon that is clean and where the workers speak good english. The salon is called LaManz Hair Design & Body Centre. It is located on Oneida Street in Appleton and the number is 920-733-7400. (We did buy some of the products she sells and I really like one of them. I haven't tried the other yet.)
