A possible job might be coming our way this month in La Crosse, and we're seriously considering moving. I love the idea of being closer to both our families in MN and WI, but know little about La Crosse. Can anyone give a little info or tips on looking for a place to live? We're looking for a place with good school and families for our 3 kids. Doesn't matter if it's renting or house at the moment, just as long as we can get up there. The only stipulation is it has to be within La Crosse city limits as it's a city job and required....so Onalaska, La Cresent, and Holmen are out Any help on the areas would be appreciated!

Also how's the housing market/property taxes up there?

The housing market is so so in this area I would really encourage you to rent, which looks like that is the plan anyways. If you get to laCrosse, I would suggest you stay to the east side of West Ave. in most cases. The property taxes are sort of really high while the wages are on the lower side. If you wish to direct message me I can give you more info. on the city and possibly more about the part of city government you may work for.

Hi docjason,
Property taxes are quite high in La Crosse, WI on account of there are two large hospitals and three large colleges and many churches that don't need to pay property taxes so home owners are paying them. On a typical $150,000 house here in La Crosse typical taxes can be from $3,900 - $5,000 depending on where the home is.
Right now in the beginning of 2013 it is a Buyers market. The DOM (Days on Market) for houses is higher than normal and the gap between list price and sold price is a wider gap than usual. There also is a high inventory so buyers have there choice of quite a few properties in their price ranges.
