What's the easiest way to get to West Bend, Wisconsin (without taking a taxi)? Keep in mind, this would be from one of the airports (or Amtrak station if it is easier). Which airport, in Chicago or Milwaukee area, would be best to fly into if you eventually want to get to West Bend, WI? I'd prefer cheaper public transportation rather than renting a car. Any information would be appreciated.

There is a bus from Milwaukee to West Bend - WCCE (Washington County Commuter Express & Shared Ride Taxi). It is tailored for commuters, so it only runs on weekdays and not late at night, but the fares are very reasonable. Your best bet is to fly into Milwaukee and get to the Intermodal (Amtrak and Greyhound) station in downtown Milwaukee. The WCCE has a stop on 5th and Wisconsin, which is 3 blocks north of the station. You can fly into MKE, take a shuttle from the terminal to the Amtrak station at the airport, and take the Amtrak Hiawatha downtown. It's a very short train ride and is only $7.50 (much cheaper than a cab). (The Hiawatha runs between Milwaukee and Chicago, but does not connect to either O'Hare or Midway). Definitely check the schedules to make sure all of this works for you.

I'm not sure where you're going in West Bend, but that may be a bigger challenge than actually getting there. I don't know anything about public transit options (if any) in West Bend.

Hope this helps!

Hi Brian. Thanks so much for your help here! Yes, doesn't look like West Bend is very easy to get to. It is St. Joseph's Community Hospital in West Bend, WI to be more precise. Hmm. So it looks pretty straight forward on taking the shuttle from Mitchell Airport (MKE) to the Amtrak Station at Milwaukee Intermodal Station. This shuttle... is it the same as any airport shuttle? Just curious as to what to look for.

The shuttle picks up just outside the baggage claim and, from what I remember, is marked pretty clearly. Don't know if you've ever been to MKE before, but it's not very big. If you walk out of the doors by baggage claim, there are two lanes. The closest one is used for cars picking up people (ie: if you were picking up someone at the airport) and just behind it is where the shuttles pick up. The shuttle service is provided by the airport and is free.

Also, according to the airport's website, there are two County bus options available. One is the 18 and the other is the Green Line. The Green Line looks like the better option as it makes fewer stops. It looks like it takes about 25 minutes to get from the airport to downtown and drops off on Water and Wisconsin, which is the heart of downtown Milwaukee. There is a stop for the WCCE a half a block away between Broadway and Water on Wisconsin. The buses run on the weekends, but the WCCE doesn't so that's still a limitation. The buses are going to be a few bucks cheaper than the train.

I'm familiar with where St. Joseph's Hospital is. The WCCE drops off at Hwy 45 and Paradise Drive (the main drag in West Bend). The hospital is a few miles south at Hwy. 45 and Pleasant Valley Rd. You'll actually pass it on the way to the bus stop. It looks like the "Shared Ride Taxi" offered by WCCE might be an option to get you to the hospital.

MKE Ground Transportation Information: Mitchell Airport :: Ground Transportation
MCTS Green Line: http://ridemcts.com/Routes-Schedules...nLine/#Weekday (choose northbound)
WCCE Shared Taxi: Washington County Commuter Express

Again, hope this helps!

Washington County Commuter Express & Shared Ride Taxi

It's an express bus that runs into Milwaukee daily
