My husband and I are interested in learning all we can about Onalaska. We're thinking of buying a house there and all we know is what we've learned online. We don't have school age children and don't need jobs. We are middle age black professionals and looking for a friendly, safe, quiet town where home builders do quality work and there are many things do do outdoors. Thanks very much.

There are many things to do outdoors around the area. From boating on the river, biking, skiing, hiking, canoing, and much more. In terms of quality builders I wish I was more familiar with the building scene but I do not know much about it. I do know there are some people who have had a hard time with contractors from the area so pick wisely. The best thing to do is try is if you visit the area try find someone from the area who is familiar with the building scene. Maybe at a local restaurant ask a local what they know or at the La Crosse area builders association they can give you more information. Although the builders association will obviously promote their members even if they are poor contractors.

I, too, am unfamiliar with La Crosse/Onalaska area builders, but most cities of that size have a Better Business Bureau that you could check with. I'd probably check there before going to a builder's association, for the same reason that huggybear mentions.
