kasha,
I'm unable to be specific, however the website link below should be fairly helpful in directing you towards some of the information you seek, in addition to any help you are able to obtain from any of the forum members.
http://www.portagewi.com/relocation.asp (broken link)
I'm having trouble getting a URL to work properly. So you'll need to copy/paste the link above, into your browser address bar. (Do not copy the brackets [ ] nor the charactiers with in the brackets)
Good luck with your relocation.

Welcome to Portage!
Hello,
I think it's so cool you're moving back to Portage! I no longer live there but my family is among the oldest names in the area..Allen.
If you would like to give me your e-mail address I'll find out what the scoop is as far as schools, shopping, whatever you like!
My family owns a lot of the land there by the park and in the hills. Everyone there is SO NICE and caring...I really do miss it so much!
Good luck!
Randi

My husband grew up in/around Portage. From what he has told me, the schools are good (he is now a teacher so hopefully that counts for something). Their is a hospital right in Portage...a bit on the old side but Madison is only a 1/2 hour away.
Neighborhoods are generally well taken care of.
Shopping...well...there is a cute little downtown area but if you want to do serious shopping head to Madison.

My parents live in Portage, and they love it. It's a nice small, historic town with quite a lot to do. The Wisconsin River runs through Portage, and there's also a decent size lake, so if you enjoy boating or fishing, you don't have to go far. There are also a couple of golf courses if you are a golfer. In the winter, there's Cascade Mountain for skiing, tubing, or snowboarding.
The downtown seems quite lively, with a good variety of stores and restaurants. Of course, you're not far from Madison if you need to do major shopping. It seems as though there is always some kind of event or festival going on in that town- not a bad thing.
