Hi,
Hubby and I used to live in Evanston IL. We loved it: the lake, the community, the 2 wholefoods and the farmers market, the downtown, the library, etc..
Right now, we are living in a small village (3000 people) in the south of France.
We are thinking about moving back to the US to raise our family. Hubby's fam is in Wisconsin.
We would need to be within reasonable distance of the Chicago airport.
We are considering any place in Wisconsin, Illinois, and Michigan.
A bilingual french/english school is always plus though obviously not a requirement given how rare that is.

If looking for city life, then Evanston is PERFECT (at least in my book). But now that we have experienced the country life, Hubby would like us to also consider less urban, more country living places where you have more space, and cost of living is a little lower..
I personally don't think we can really find a very liberal, friendly small town with readily available organic food, a great farmers market, in a reasonable distance of Chicago. But I would love to be proven wrong.

Any ideas?

Shorewood? Is that a suburb of Milwaukee?

Me again .. I have done some research. Shorewood does indeed sound like a great place. I am surprised though because it does not feel that much less urban than Evanston. Sounds like it is pretty much on the edge of Milwaukee..
Real estate prices are cheaper, but it looks pretty urban to me, and I wrong?

Shorewood is urban with excellent schools, but slightly less dense than Evanston
Wauwatosa and Whitefish Bay is slightly less urban than Shorewood and have excellent schools. Wauwatosa is less dense.
West Allis is similar to Wauwatosa but cheaper
Greendale is less dense
Brookfield and Mequon are good less dense rural type suburbs with access to shopping and excellent schools.

I lived in Shorewood and would go back in an instant. Wauwatosa is better than West Allis. Whitefish Bay is closer to shopping, but Shorewood is closer to Whole Foods and nightlife. I rate Brookfield and Mequon equally.

edit: missed the "reasonable distance of the Chicago airport" portion.
