Although I do find this hard to beleive that the Wisconsin state government can racially discriminate while avoiding any sort of lawsuits.

Like I have said in many posts before to people. I have a solution that might make you happier. You could always move to IL!!! Sounds like it is a better fit for you than Wisconsin.
Absolutely Florida has the same medical assistance program that Wisconsin does. Now you know!

If you find it hard to believe that Wisconsin can discriminate without a lawsuit, you'd be right--it is hard to believe. But then again, so are alot of things that go on! Oh, and please....please tell me why a low-income Vietnamese refugee is any more deserving of assistance than my husband? Since you seem to know so much about us, like what state would be a good fit for us, I'm sure you can tell me that.

Don't suffer with SAD. Get some lights in your house to combat it. I spoke with the DR that I worked with out east and he said in January we had 3 people in our town commit suicide. NH has had a lot of cloudy snowy days last month and many people can't handle it.

While I may not agree with everything BettyBoop has said in her posts, I certainly understand a lot of it. If you're not from here, even if you are accustomed to a cold northern climate, WI is a tough adjustment and not one that we are all willing or able to make.

Because they were treated as war heroes as they helped out the US government while they were being persecuted be their own government. I hardly think that a little help with something like medical hardly makes up for the discrimination and racism that they experience from Wisconsinites and the low paying jobs that they receive when they come.

I am as upset about the medical situation as you are. I am 23 years old, and cannot afford health insurance. I sure hope I don't get cancer this year, or struck by lightning from these Florida tropical t-storms (I live in the lightning capital of the world). Taking all this in to consideration, I will be carefully voting this fall for someone I hope with take steps to correct our broken system. But with all that said, this is a nationwide problem, not a Wisconsin problem.

BTW...I never said what state would be a better fit for you, you did. I moved to Florida because my hometown of Eau Claire didn't have enough to offer a young adult. Now that I am in Florida I am surrounded by crime, high cost of living and poor spending management by the Florida government. Florida ranks amongst the bottom for education quality. Now tell me where the BILLIONS of tourism dollars go? We sure don't have much to show for it in the sunshine state, but I still love Florida.

My point is, there are trade offs no matter where you live. I think people generally move to Wisconsin for the friendly people, the 4 distinct seasons, the great education system, the beauty and the recreation. If these things are not your style then there are other options.

I think it is funny how the state has such different weather. We are in central WI and we had some sun on Sunday. Today it is snowing but they are saying sun on Wednesday and Friday.
My brother, in Chicago, said they had a snow storm yesterday that no one predicted. Gotta love the unpredictable winter weather!
I sleep with a window open unless it is below zero.

Thanks Kate. I did get extra lighting and will be looking into the special SAD lights, although I think with the turn of the calendar my mood improved just from that simple act.

It doesn't feel cold outside to me unless the temperature is below 10F. If the wind is strong with temps in the 30s it can feel a little chilly. -10 to -20F with no wind is not a big problem for me either.

Ooohhhh, you did not just say that! No, tell me you're joking!

The idea that Wisconsin should pay some kind of debt to the Vietnamese is right along the same lines as black people thinking they can walk all over white folks because of the way they were treated decades ago. I once worked with a black guy who used to always say negative things about white people. Why? Because he could get away with it! Oh, but it couldn't be the other way around, or we white folks would get our back side whooped. But yep, you guessed it--good ol' betty stood up to him, lol.

This kind of racism (reverse racism?) is no better than the other kind. And anyone who tells me (without knowing my husband, and without knowing what he may have done or not done for America) that my husband does not deserve the same equality as any one else, any other race, shape, nationality.....anyone who tells me that is full of it. Try telling me when my husband is sick that he doesn't deserve treatment as much as the next (Asian) guy. I'll just excuse trabbz comments as ignorance.
