After living in GB for about 3 years, I can say that I am a bit more blunt than others here. I could hardly wait to leave. And we gave it a good shot. Kids were in soccer. That was fun. Fishing north of GB in the rivers was fun. Fourth of July show on the river was fun. Taking the kids to Bay Park was fun. Door County was fun. Packers are fun. Housing is very reasonable. Here is what was NOT fun: provincial attitudes, extremely conservative views, public schools sucked, private schools you needed to be catholic-and there is an air of superiority with that, almost no shopping, medical care was atrocious, their are areas of GB and DePere that DO stink from the paper mills, and they have been saying for twenty years or more that they are "cleaning it up." Sorry. You can find people who are really friendly (not just surface friendly) but you will have to look far and wide. Hope you dont have to move there.

Really? Green Bay has a great park system -- including Bay Beach Amusement Park and Wildlife Sanctuary, beautiful botanical gardens, a great trail system, NEW Zoo, wildlife preserves, water park type pools in a two of the parks, several places offer indoor pools as well, a children's theater company, a new Children's Museum in the downtown. Sounds nothing like where she's leaving from.

I grew up in Stevens Point. I lived for a summer in DePere when I was 13, and my father lived the last 10 years of his life in Green Bay, and I visited often. Compared to Stevens Point (a town maybe 1/3 the size of Green Bay) Green Bay was a wasteland. The "parks system" was worthless. Bay Beach is OK if you have kids, but the botanical gardens, the zoo... yeah, each of those things is good for an hour or two - once - and then you're done with it. Bleh.

Green Bay was absolutely, without question, the most boring town I've ever spent time in in my entire life, either as an adult or a child. You literally could not pay me enough money to consider living there, much less raise children there.

I guess that's why GB area has grown to over 300,000 people and Point area remains tiny. Maybe you don't want to live there but U.S. census shows decade after decade that is one of the few growth areas of Wisconsin LOL!!!

Well, by that metric, I guess we should all move to Bangladesh!

We'll probably just have to agree to disagree. I don't want to offend anyone, but that was just one town that every time I was there, all I could ever think about was how soon I could get the hell out. But, to each their own. To those who like it, it's a good place to live, and I'm happy for them.

No place is for everyone. We'll agree on that. Happy New Year!

Green Bay is over 300,000? When did that happen? I thought it was hovering around 100,000 since forever.
As far as GB goes, it has it's good and bad as far as I'm concerned. Commuting is easy (in good weather), there's are good grocery stores (festival beats many in other parts of the country) many people are involved with their kids and an emphasis is put on family and get togethers. On the flip side, there's not much to do. Sure, there's the zoo, which is super nice, but there is admission (which is understandable) except for one day a week and how often can you look at a giraffe? Bay Beach is seasonal. There really aren't many events and for me it was too conservative to be fun - except for hockey and packer games. I have to say people know how to have fun there compared to other places I've visited. If locals have never experienced what other areas offer or how active people are in other areas, then they'll never miss it. You won't miss free movies, plays and concerts in the parks or community art classes or whatever. Relocating to GB from a place that offers more could be an adjustment, especially if moving from a warmer climate where people are active, dining outside and getting outside more. It all depends on what you're looking for. Housing is very inexpensive and you can get a lot for your money compared to other areas. You can get large wooded lots for a reasonable price just outside of GB. I enjoyed the quiet pace at times, and the school system I was in was very good. I don't feel like I got much for my property taxes though in the way of community events and amenities and I didn't care for the industrial feel of the city.

The 300,000 reference was to the Green Bay area, the metro population is 311,098 according to MSA stats.

The city population has slowed the last couple of decades but the suburbs have boomed. The city has grown as follows:

1950: 52,735
1960: 62,952
1970: 87,829
1980: 87,947
1990: 96,466
2000: 102,313
2010: 104,057

Would be interesting to see where the population increase has been a result of people moving in from out of state or people within the state moving back into the city.

Don't know about that, but the city has seen a noticeable shift in demographics as ethnic minorities make up increasing percentiles of the city population.
