Kewaskum
I just received this email from my daughter who lives in Kewaskum, WI.
“We just received notice in October that our property taxes have been doubled! No advance warning. We received the notice in Oct and taxes are due in December. The appraisal company that works for the city made some type of "posting error" so some home owners were never notified of the increase. There is nothing we can do; just the fact that we have only been notified 2 months before the due date. The city says "too bad" more or less and the appraisal company says that according to state law, they have no deadline to notify us before.”

Say what? I am moving to Kewaskum and having a fit over the taxes in Wisconsin as it is. I live in Missouri, very cheap on taxes. And just where do they expect people to get the money to cover airheads mistake?

Wow I am still floored, can your daughter email me to tell me what is it like living in Kewaskum anyway? Are they building houses, sub divisions there? How is the ski resort there. Are there any running clubs there or near by. Oh and yes how are the schools, my son is a Junior this year. Thanks. And above all tell me how people got out that tax situation.

I never did understand it!
I don't know all the details because I left Wisconsin over twenty years ago! I just get updates when something happens that might interest me. I live in Arizona with three married children still in Wisconsin. When I left WI I was paying about $3600 in property tax and bought a new home in AZ that was much larger and my taxes started at less than $1,000. People have made all kinds of excuses for the high taxes there. I have heard that it is because of good schools, libraries, roads, etc. I don't know...I lived there for 45 years and here for 20. I can't see the need for the taxes being that high.
You know how it is...when the kids are in trouble , they call their parents!

Washington County is one of the higher in terms of taxes, etc., in part due to its proximity to Milwaukee and the environ -- for example, gas is cheaper in Dodge County than Washington (at least it was last year when I went home for my wedding). West Bend has always been a bedroom community for Milwaukee and people wanting to escape the city life. Jackson and Kewauskum sit on either side (south and north) and in conjunction with the bypass they put in when I was in high school (20 years ago), help to make them highly desireable places to live and commute from. The school districts are good, I have a preference for West Bend's, but that's where I grew up. The county also still has some scenic and rural spots that aren't always too prevelant in SE Wisconsin anymore. As far as "ski resort", Kewauskum and Slinger both have "Hills" that provide good skiing, but it's nothing like the Rockies or even New England.....

Don't you just love the government be it local or not??? I went to highschool in Kewaskum, I see things haven't changed there since the 60's and 70's.
