Looks like it is shaping up to be a snowy, cold winter. We actually have a snow day here today. That almost never happens here. My kids were beyond excited. There is supposed to be an ice storm, but so far we are just having huge snowflakes and some sleet. It is warm out too at 30 degrees

It's not even winter yet. Hope you survive.

That's better. Good attitude. Get out there and celebrate the weather we have. Polypropylene layered underwear, and physical activity are keys to making it in the outdoors. Monitor your body heat, don't let yourself get too heated, and don't let yourself get too chilled.

I think that a big part of dealing with winter is the psychological part. I've just recently moved back to WI from the Washington DC area, where it very rarely gets below zero, maybe once every five years or so. Out there I enjoyed going out winter camping. People were aghast that I would do that. One trip, some people were so concerned that they called in the park service to come out and search for me. [ I was just fine, was enjoying a wild turkey flock of 50 or so birds.]

On the other hand, in Alaska, Boy Scouts earn winter survival skills badges by going out in -25 conditions.
Drivers there are required to stop for other stopped motorists. Alaskans also do just fine in winter. So, I think it has a lot to do with one's approach. If you know you are going to be miserable in the cold, well, then you will be.

I love the way Wisconsin celebrates winter. People suit up and head out on 100 mile snowmobile tours. Others head out to the middle of a lake and sit out there all day in the name of ice fishing. People get out for birdwatching, photography, cross country skiing, snowshoing. And I know you have seen the crowd at Lambeau field, where the camera pans through the stands and finds the guys stripped down to their bare chests.

It's part of the culture here. Work yourself up to it, take a couple of deep breaths, and get out there and enjoy.

off of soapbox now

I know when my husband was a boy scout they winter camped at Devils Head near Baraboo.
I love the cold weather. After I walk I love to sit on the deck and soak up the sun. It does wonders to the spirit.
We missed the storm today. My brother in Chicago said he had ice and rain. My sister in Woodstock Il said she had ice and my sister near Milwaukee said they had snow. We had a few flurries and that was it.
gallon- you are so right people in WI don't shy away from the cold. Here in Wausau we have the Badger State Winter Games. So many people show up for the various events. It has become bigger and bigger every year. Our local ice rink is frozen and tonight there were a lot of kids skating. I see people out taking walks and of course the ice fishermen are out. We have the Polar Plunge for Special Olympics coming up after the New Year. Nine Mile opened up for cross country skiing yesterday. So much too do!

I moved from Green Bay to Florida, and now live in Colorado. I can remember those below zero days where it hurts to breathe and your nose hairs freeze immediately when you go outside. Regardless, I still miss my hometown! It's difficult to find other locations that match Wisconsin's friendliness and quality of life. The good, in my opinion, outweighs the bad. There's no perfect place to live, weather-wise or lifestyle-wise. All we can do is find that special place where we can be ourselves and love the weather/lifestyle/people 85% of the time.

I like the cold. Ice fishing is awsome! It is a great way to enjoy winters in the Upper Midwest whenever I visit relatives in Minnesota.

My kids are looking forward to ice fishing as well. The neighbor has set up his shack and he asked my kids to go along this weekend. They can't wait.

I'm enjoying the winter! Thought it was great that lots of people stood out for an hour in the cold to watch a Christmas parade, great fun!

I'll take snow over ice any day! My sister and brother-in-law drove from Iowa last Sat. not a fun ride but that is winter in the midwest, some years worse than others.

I drove down to Illinois yesterday for a quickie one day visit and I was glad to return home! I'll take this small town living any day over northeast Illinois.
