We rode around downtown and went to the marina. It reminded me so much of Flint, MI before it went to absolute hell. Lol. It made me feel so nostalgic and at home! There were so many likenesses to downtown flint when it was nice, and other areas of town reminded me of different areas of flint. The main difference is Flint, MI isn't on a Great Lake, of course.

It was a really amazing feeling. It may seem weird, but it felt like the next best thing to going home, which we can't do, due to the crime and Grime in flint right now. I could almost see us getting a house there.

Anyone know if Sheboygan is at significant risk of becoming another Flint? What is the economy doing there? What are the major employers in Sheboygan?

I know it isn't flint, and I wouldn't want it to be, but there was something so familiar about the place. I think it's the size and 'style' of city I'm really comfortable in, and my husband is amazed too, about how much it reminded him of back home before it died. (I realize that Flint is technically bigger, but the downtown is the same size, maybe bigger in Sheboygan.)

Thanks

It was raining while in town so I didn't take pics there and drench my phone, but I did get a few of when it stopped trying to figure out how to post them

Default Sheboygan

I doubt Sheboygan will become a Flint type town in my lifetime. We moved here from Milwaukee 15 years ago, and it was the best decision we've ever made.

Yeah, I can't imagine it ever being that bad off.
I was also impressed with Sheboygan's downtown and most of it's residential areas that I saw.
Seems like a nice enough town. Being on the lake is a big plus. Surprisingly, lakefront property in Wisconsin does't automatically mean upscale and expensive like it does in most other places. Not sure if that's good or bad.
Good for those of us who can't afford to pay much more than 100k for a house, I suppose. Property taxes in Sheboygan also seem to be a lot lower than in Milwaukee county. Jobs would be my biggest concern.

I love Sheboygan! I used to work there at a store called Nest. It's a nice little town. I plan to head over there sometime this weekend, in fact.

I always found people to be very friendly and welcoming in Sheboygan. It has a nice beach at Deland Park, good restaurants and shopping... there are worse places to live, that's for sure. :-)

Sheboygan is no Flint. It already went through the hardest times a while back, but nothing approaching Flint's problems. It's a nice, clean town and it has the lake going for it. The river and harbor were a Superfund site, but have been totally cleaned up, although the human exposure part is not yet complete. Probably not a big deal, but worth mention.

As Northbound74 mentioned, jobs are the primary concern. If you already have one, great. If you work remotely or own a company, great. People like that can live like kings in places like Sheboygan, making money that would support them in larger cities.

It's a nice town on the upswing. Some surprising amenities, like the Kohler Arts Center. Speaking of Kohler, that powerhouse ensures a good consistent infusion of cash, not to mention Kohler's courses making Sheboygan County one of the top golfing destinations in the country. I think it's a place that could boom over the next decade.
