AussieMale: I was so pleased to see that you and your family are coming to the US soon and will be living in Wisconsin. I am a transplanted Aussie who lived in Wisconsin for 7 years. We were in central Wisconsin in a small town called Phillips. It's famous for the Concrete Park as you enter town. I absolutely loved it there and I hope that your family's experience is the same.
As for me, my parents lived in Kingscliff which is just south of Coolangatta in NSW. We used to shop on the Gold Coast all the time. In fact, we always go back there when we go home (I'm married to an American).
Here are some useful sites if you haven't seen them already:
www.marinette.wi.us
and
SCHOOL DISTRICT HOMEPAGE
Both of those sites will give you great info about schools, as will a previous posts
GreatSchools.net. Our children were in 3rd grade, 8th grade and 10th grade when we arrived in Phillips. They received a great education. Our son graduated with Honors from Phillips High School and then went on to University in Texas. The 5 other guys he hung out with at school and his 2 friends from church all went on to University. Some of them went into Engineering, our son went into Aeronautical Science and others into Chemistry and .... (I forget). But I think that speaks for itself.
We arrived in Phillips on December 26 in a snowstorm via Tucson, AZ and Papua New Guinea so we too were seriously in need of cold weather clothes. Jenny00 had some good ideas for where to buy it.
I'd be so happy to answer any questions you or your wife have. Welcome to the U.S.
