Could it be all the white snow? I took about forty shots this morning and I was just going back thru them, most of them look like black and whites.

Thats the thing. My 3 shots here were all taken at the same location, just tens of feet apart, all at about the same time of day, in the same heavy snow conditions. Yet one of them is different. Something to puzzle over. My camera is a Nikon D200, and there are really knowledgeable people on the forums about technical questions like this. I'll pose the question over there.

My backyard looked pretty much black and white this morning. Most of the green pine boughs were covered with snow.

I live in Oklahoma but spent Christmas with some family in the Dells. You guys got a beautiful snowfall just in time for Christmas! That's for sure!

Yes, we've been getting a lot of snow this year. Here in central Wisconsin we have already had over 30 inches. I think the average for December is around ten inches.

Ok I think we have an answer on the black and white issue in our high contrast snow pictures. It's pretty simple, and obvious, now that one sees it. We are shooting with significant jpg compression. That's it! The jpg compression wants to get by with as few colors as possible. When it has to decide between deep dark green, and black, sometimes it chooses to go black. The way to bring out the deep greens would be to shoot in native raw format, uncompressed. I should have spotted this one a lot sooner.
