I think someplace near Madison may be a good start point for the original poster then get to know the state a little better and see if you wish to move on someplace else. I think the northern parts of the state are great but you are much more likely to be restricted in your mode of travel for several months per year; having made that comment even Madison recorded record snowfalls a few short years ago so travel may have been limited to vehicle or mass transit.

Does anyone have any good things to say about shawano? And its surrounding areas? I live in Vancouver Washington. And need to move to a safer environment for my family members.
I work for a security company that is global. But thanks to my line of work. And thanks to gangs and dealers in southern California. I have PTSD so I need a quiet place. But for there to be some shopping and really good food places to eat

Shawano is a very "local" town that's connected to a county-sized reservation that has some the highest crime stats in the state. In some categories, it compares with Inner Milwaukee in terms of drugs/crime rate. While you'll be separate from the reservation, there can be some spillover. Additionally, it's a sort of weird set-up there where a cult (SIST) owns a large chunk of businesses and property around town. It's a pretty area that's on the edge of the northwoods - I like it - but probably not the most ideal small town in WI for you.

Move to Wausau, WI...it's beautiful, safe, decent cost of living and centrally located within in the state. Very friendly town that's upbeat. Not huge, not small. Has everything you could ask for. Perfect to raise a family. Housing prices are really good for what you get. There's water and lakes everywhere. Lots of nice parks and a beautiful town center. Very vibrant and lively without being to fast paced. Has all the good shopping and restaurants you could hope for. There's organic and co-ops and farms. Come for a visit, you will be hooked!

Default Multiple threads reveal...

So, let's review; OP is looking at a small city/town in Wisconsin, Maine, or South Dakota that offers walkability, affordability, and ample employment options. This area must be low crime, not a college atmosphere, and near water. OP is from TN and has not experienced the cold northern winters, has a limited skill set or experience to obtain employment beyond entry level, and doesn't sound like a partier or drinker.

Why is almost everyone trying to talk this person into Green Bay or Madison? Green Bay isn't walkable, Madison isn't affordable and she doesn't want a college town atmosphere. Kenosha and Stevens Point may be good additions to the list, although the argument can be made that Point is a college town. (I went there till they kicked me out) Kenosha also has Uline and Abbot labs for employment, Stevens Point has Sentry Insurance and some smaller companies in the industrial parks towards Portage that could offer some opportunities.

The OP is from 2014.
I'm guessing she's figured something out by now.

Comparison of Wisconsin Cities to Madison:

Madison is 29% more expensive than Wausau.
Housing is 116% more expensive in Madison.

Madison is 19% more expensive than Appleton.
Housing is 65% more expensive in Madison.

Madison is 13% more expensive than Kenosha.
Housing is 68% more expensive in Madison.

Compared to the rest of Wisconsin, Madison is overpriced. I moved to Wisconsin about 4 years ago. I tried to find something around Madison that was "affordable" but Sun Prairie was about as close as I could get and what I could get there was more expensive for less space than where I was coming from and other places in Wisconsin.

It's more expensive than the rest of Wisconsin, sure, but the rest of Wisconsin is damn cheap. And it is cheap because it is economically depressed and there is little going on (outside of Milwaukee). I think Madison is a straight up bargain and super affordable for what it is.

After Madison I lived in Chicago, that is pretty affordable to. After that, Boston, then San Francisco, now THOSE are places that are overpriced.

Madison, is NOT overpriced.
