Hello! My family and I are relocating to the Wausau area this next summer. I am a teacher in CA now and am wondering what teaching is like in central WI...I heard someone say that teaching positions are hard to come by...how hard is it? Also, out here I make nearly 80k a year, I imagine it is less in Wi, but how much? And how are the benefits? If it helps, I have 7 years experience in elementary education, have a masters degree and tons of units beyond my masters (in CA I am as far across the pay scale as I can go), and although I've only taught elementary my CA credential is good thru 9th grade. Also, anybody know how hard it is to get a Wisconsin teaching credential?

Yeah, I can tell you. My oldest daughter is an elementary school teacher, and several of my managers at work have wives who are teachers.
It *is* fairly hard to break into the teaching field here.
This state is not growing very rapidly. Many parts of the state have continually declining school enrollments. And the areas that have a little bit of demand for teachers (i.e. Milwaukee and Racine) are not districts where you would want to teach.
Even Waukesha, a fairly well-to-do district and county, with a fairly stable enrollment I believe, laid off 30 or so teachers a year or year and a half ago.
There is quite alot of competiton for teaching jobs here. The master's degree, I'm told, may be more of a hindrance than a help, because then they have to bring you in at a higher salary than, say, a new teacher just out of college with their education degree. They can bring them in at a lower salary, and right now it's all about saving money.
So, for better or worse, that's the situation here.
But if you can break into teaching here, benefits are good, and teacher union (WEA; Wisconsin Education Association) is quite strong.
