This is reference to the comments made about racial tolerance, or the lack of, in New London, Clintonville...I am an African American lady, my intended is Caucasian. Of you who are familiar with New London, how would I fare? Would it not be easy for me to live there? Are there any accounts of racial intolerance of mixed races and children there? Thanks, God bless you all.

I would stay away from Clintonville, Hortonville, and smaller towns like New London (where I was born and raised) and Weyauwega and Waupaca - I used to go through those towns to see my uncle and people would stare at the boys horribly; I was asked several times 'where did you get them' - people thought I adoped them and when I told them they were mind they were horrified! Good Luck to you - Madison is a great city too - so much to do!

I am from the deep south, so I have dealt with racism in some areas, but would you or would you not recommend my move there. Do you know of any accounts whereby mixed races and children have been negatively treated...that is pretty bad with the children mentioned above. Would there be a possibility that my husband would be put in a very intense and uncomfortable situation for marrying me?

here is the issue, I have a friend who lives in a small town Fond dulac, Wi both her and her husband are white with black kids.......do they have "problems" no not really but her kids as they get older can not related to being black because of being raised in a white town. I also have black friend raised in Madison who turned 18 and moved to Milwaukee, hated Madison. I work in the Milwaukee area and althought the North Side and South Side are very racial there are nice parts of Milwaukee such as Shorewood, Hales Corners,White Fish Bay, Bayshore etc, that will allow you and then to live in a truly mixed community with just being "tolerated". Look around if your kids are the only black kids in school, it probably wont work for them.
Good luck!

Here's my 2-cents:
Not being black, I would be a fool to pass myself off as an expert, but I don't believe that ANY community, with the possible exceptions of Milwaukee and Madison, has sufficient numbers of African-Americans so that a child could explore his/her African roots. On the other hand, to say that a school system with a low level of diversity due to being in a 98% Caucasian (with the other 1.99% Native American) area "never" works is also wrong. Because I've seen it work.
As a rule you won't find any problems in the small towns of northern Wisconsin. Yes, there are a few yahoos- although fewer than most places of similiar conditions. The one caveat I'd give ya is among older (> 65) lifelong inhabitants of such burgs.
Many only "know" black folks from tv and its sensationalism. They aren't truly racist, for the most part. Only ignorant on such esoteric (for them) matters.

Thanks for your replies, Mpla and Geechie North! So in a nutshell, the children if we were to have any, may experience problems with identity on the African American side, and due to lack of diversity in the school system. My future husband and I, due to no direct contact with my race, some of the elderly citizens of small places, such as New London, and Clintonville, will not like that we are there--together--and scrutiny may exists. Some have only learned by what was passed down and choose to hang onto that resistant to change is what I have experienced here in the South...and it cuts both ways.
May I share the following:The choice to embrace love and commonalities is a choice, God has no respect of persons, why is it in such a country, whose anthem sings proudly, "the land of the free and the home of the Brave", are some people choosing to keep THEMSELVES in bondage, while seeking to alienate at the same time. Christ died for all, his blood is red, so is mine, yours, everyone. We are a beautiful array of colors, and this same array will be seen in Heaven as well...why is it so hard to repent, to forgive...to forgive. I know this is not a perfect country, or world, but selfishness and hatred and ignorance to the truth appears to the root of bigotry of any one color. Jesus said, as he has loved us to love one another, and went to the cross, sacrificing his life for ALL of us....then rose again on the third day with all power and all victory, he reigns for ever. So with all of that being said...why should any one be bound to chains of the past, legacies of hatred from the past to be passed down to their children, and their children's children, etc....when CHRIST HAS SET US FREE from all of that.
Peace, love and blessings to all of you!
