I never really thought of the accent we have, especially those "North of 29". I've traveled to a few places and had a few comments made, but I couldn't believe the reaction I got when I was in Alaska! Two words would come out of my mouth and I'd get a "Oh yah? You betcha don'tcha?" and I'd be pegged as a Minnesotan or Wisconsin. It's fun though.

And camraderie (sp?), someone mentioned that and totally nailed it. You meet someone from Wisconsin in distant areas and you both start talking and comparing, possibly using the right hand's palm as a map. Oddly, strangely, ironically, you can often find a mutual aquaintance. Sounds odd, but its true. Or at least a recognized name. Oh, and don't get us Wisconsinites started on Leinies, the best beer around.

Leinenkugel's Berry Weiss ... ahhhhhhhhhhh.

Cheese curds ... ahhhhhhhhhhh.

Agree that the roads are crappy, but Louisianna takes the biscuit ... and they don't get winters like we do!

I live in Green Bay so that is my only point of reference. As far as Chicago, that is exactly the problem. People from Wisconsin do not seem to realize that there is a whole state of people below Chicago who are nothing like Chicago. People in southern Illinois are gracious and kind drivers for the most part. They will stop to help a stranded driver and will slow down and give leeway to the "little old lady" who may not have the best driving habits anymore. Southern Illinois is much slower paced and courteous. Trust me, we would like to give Chicago to Wisconsin. They are much more like Wisconsin than they are in relation to the rest of the state.

Well I'm not from Wisconsin, I was born and raised in Chicago. While I agree that southern IL is different than Chicago. I also say they are not like what you describe. Yes they are slower paced (key word is SLOW). I personally wouldn't want to give Chicago to Wisconsin. They litter the place every summer both physically and litterally.

Did you grow up in GB?

You should have thought of it - being that you are from IL...and assuming you've seen at least a couple of Cubs games on WGN.... the commercial was always on the games. (trying to jog the ol' memory)

I was actually born in Missouri and spent some of my youth in Iowa. After I was married we 1st lived near Urbana. I agree that the lower part of IL is different then Chicago. It was a nice area but we really love WI. Granted we have only been permanent residents for 2 months but we owned our home for almost 5 years before we moved here. I find the people so friendly. We have been invited somewhere by someone in our new community almost every week end since we have been here.

Default Hmmmmmmm

I just have to say that I was born and raised in small town Illinois and moved to Minocqua, WI (yep, "way up nort") when I was 14. I graduated from high school there and attended college in WI for 3 years. The entire time I was there I COULD NOT WAIT TO GET OUT. I always knew that there was a big world out there that I needed to explore, and felt that WI was like a big cave I couldn't escape from.

I moved to Florida for a few years and now live in Los Angeles. My parents have moved back to IL and I now have no ties to WI besides my husband's family. I wish I could say that I missed it, but I don't at all.

I have noticed one thing about a lot of people from WI that I will never understand - they don't seem to realize that there is more to the world than their state. So many people have never crossed the state's border and are completely fine with it. They don't understand that there is a world waiting out there for them, complete with oceans, mountains, culture...

I don't know if it is the fact that they are naive or close-minded, but people seem to live in a bubble in WI. Maybe I am just speaking about the "up nort" residents, I don't know. I went to college in Milwaukee for 3 years and thought it was the most drab, grey, smelly, depressing place in the country. Living in L.A., I feel that I am part of the world. Living in WI, I always felt that so many people lived through their television sets, too scared to leave their nests. It seems that a lot of Wisconsinites are afraid to leave their families, or even more disturbing, don't even want to know that there is more out there. There are generations of families that never lived anywhere but WI. Scary.

I am sorry if I offended anyone here. These are just my observations after living in WI for several years. Do I still feel some excitement upon seeing a WI license plate, and use my hand to describe how "up nort" I lived? Yes. Do I miss cheese curds and Jack's pizza? You bet'cha (LOL). Do I think that WI is home to some of the friendliest people out there? Of course. But none of those things could ever have stopped me from exploring the rest of the world, and realizing that so many other places offer things that WI couldn't even come close to. And OH MY, those awful winters! Did I mention that I felt like I was in a cold, dark cave for months at a time while living in WI already?? Depressing.

This is called "Wisconsin Pride" which is a state of pride that very few states have. New Yorkers love their state, Californians love their state, and Wisconsinites love their state and are quick to tell everyone about it. I see this as a very good thing.
