I think there is something to be said for an area where people have a history and roots, and by that I mean that people DO WANT to stay near their families and aren't too interested in jet-setting around the country. I've lived both lives and currently I live in an area that is most definately transient. No one seems to be from here and therefore, there are no real connections. People go off and do their own thing...no history...no real pride...people are simply removed from eachother and their surrounds, and interestingly enough, from the state they have chosen to call home. So...I don't necessarily see anything wrong with WI peeps and their love for their state and focus on their world. I think most people know there is a big world out there and are conscious of world and national issues, but does that dictate that they leave the families, homes, and state that they so love? I don't think so. It's for these very reasons that I am drawn to WI...So I say...great!

Wisconsin pride???? Oh yeah! As in my previous post in this thread, we moved to Cedar Rapids Iowa 4 years ago. Grew up in the Milwaukee area.

There is no pride in this city or state to speak of. People are unfriendly no matter if you heard they were friendly, not true. Not one person on our block welcomed us to neighborhood(we've been in this house for almost 3 years). We live in a decent neighborhood too.

No one has any respect for their homes for that matter either. We cut our grass, shovel our snow and rake our leaves. Can't say that for many here. Everyone's grass is just all weeds, no grass at all. People probably think my husband and I are nuts at the yard work we do. This came from the pride/respect our parents had for their homes. The litter in this city is beyond horrible. I've never seen anything like it.

We have Wisconsin pride spread throughout our home. Anyone that comes into our home, knows where we are from.

We are proud to be a Wisconsinites. That's something no one can ever take from us.

Sounds like you are having rotten luck in Cedar Rapids.... Any chance you can move to Iowa City? It's not that far and we had wonderful neighbors there and the people in general were friendly.

I certainly didn't want to trash the people of the Midwest -I will forever associate myself with being from the Midwest and all of the people I love the most are from there. I think you are right, Signora. What I wrote about WI could be written about people from any rural area.

Nope, hubby's work is about 5 minutes from us. If we were going to sell our house and move, it's gonna be back to Wisconsin. That's where our family and true friends are. Hopefully this will be soon too.

I think like a lot of places in the country, sometimes you have to be born in a town or city to fit in or even like it. No offense to any Iowan's here, but this city and this state is not for us. It's just so backwards and tries to hard to live in the past. If you ask me, Cedar Rapids is dying a slow death. Just watching what is going on here everyday, it's gonna be scary in about 10 years if something doesn't change.

"Don't know what you got, till it's gone" has never rang more true...

We were in Door County and Green Bay this weekend. The more time I spend travelling around the state the more I realize what wonderful people there are. We had a blast this weekend and people are so friendly. Everyone where we went people were so nice.

What a fun post. I moved away from Wisconsin (Viroqua) 22 years ago (when I turned 18). I try to get back every couple of years.

Ahh, yes, Wisconsin, home of the "davenport", "front room", "Supper Clubs" and "cheese curds" (among many other interesting things).

I remember when I moved to Boston in 1986...people asked me what country I came from because of my accent. lol It took me no longer than a week or two to realize that people were just plain rude out east.

For the past 20+ years I've lived all over the world, but Wisconsin will always be very special to me. A simple life, kind, warm people and a beautiful state.

Now I only return for summer vacations with my young daughters. They love the vacations there...we gave them the option of Disneyland or Wisconsin next summer...they both quickly said "Wisconsin!" Our vacations are filled with day trips to relatives, county fairs, fishing, waterskiing, target practice in the stone quarries, camping, catching lightning bugs, bbq's, etc. They love how everyone talks back there. Every time we come back, we immediately hear "you bet'cha", "uff-da", "don'cha know", "yaa, yaa", etc. It's a riot! They also noticed how friendly people are. In Ladysmith, we stopped to get a bite to eat and after a 2 or 3 minute conversation, my daughters asked me how I knew that lady. I said I didn't. They were shocked...it was as if the lady and I knew each other for 20 years.

I now live in Colorado Springs and absolutely love it here. I'm fortunate enough to meet people from all over the world on a regular basis, but I always make an extra effort to speak with visitors from Wisconsin. We just have that indescribable connection. It's kinda weird...us Wisconsinites just have to seek each other out in other states and we tend to be so loud about it. I lost my accent several years back, but it comes right back when I talk to someone from back there.

Just a few months ago, I was at a restaurant here in Colorado Springs just before the Colorado College/Wisconsin Hockey Game. A lady came up to us (we were wearing our Badger Gear) and was so excited to meet us. She too lived in the Springs and was from Wisconsin. She just had to come over to our table and have a seat and talk about the fun times back there. Once again, my daughters thought that was so cool.

In summation, Wisconsin is a great place. After living all over the world, I'll be the first one to say that living in Wisconsin is very special. I miss it, but at least I get a taste of it every couple of years.

We're coming back this summer...get the cheese curds, brats, casseroles, potato salad, and beer (Leinie's Sunset Wheat, please) ready for us!

If any of you Wisconsinites come out here to Colorado Springs for a visit, look me up. I'll be more than happy to help you with your plans.

Cheers,
Bullitt

A few years back we were in Vegas at our hotel. We decided to hit the slots. We were standing next to a guy who was just watching everyone play in the section we were in. We were thinking he was going to take a machine. So he starts talking to us and telling us all the going ons. We started to talk about how long we were staying. He asked where we were from. When we told him Wisconsin, he infomed us he was living in West Bend. We were living in a city called Muskego at the time. He told us that they had lived in these condos that were right around the corner where we lived. They had just recently moved. Talk about a small world. We spent the next couple days finding each other and talking the day away. It was great. When we wear Wisconsin clothes there, we get a lot of response(all good).

Thankfully we are only 3 1/2 hours away and go home quite a lot. My parents come here a lot too, so our accents are in full force. The lady I work for always tells me that when my parents are here, our accents are really harsh. I love it!

I love when I go to the grocery store when it is cold and people leave their cars running and doors unlocked. I really feel safe here and that is another wonderful part of living here.
