Our home is 12 years old; we have about 2500 logs in the 22 foot tall home. This winter has been brutal, well below zero, and our logs are cracking through the middle all over the house. How do we repair these cracks?

I would call a log home builder to get their opinions.

I'm no expert so you will likely want to talk to a reputable log home person or company and possibly have them inspect your home.

From the little I know about the log homes, it is normal that some splitting will happen but is yours within the normal range??? This winter has been long with a good amount of below zero nights and last winter is the worst I have known of in my 54 winters.

I have been in some log buildings and seen what looked like a wood color silicon sealer in the cracks and I know of one person who resorted to using a wood siding on one side of a log home to keep out the elements.

Hopefully you will know whom the log supplier was for your home and can contact them direct.

I may also be way off base but are you running a humidifier to help keep moisture in the home for the long dry winters. This may help but also confer with a log home specialist.

Default Humidity would help

Thank you for your comments. We built the home ourselves--it took 12 1/2 years. The logs came from the Amish sawmill next door, and we let them season 3 years. We think you hit the nail on the head with the idea of adding more humidity inside.
