Default Speaking Naturally, "It's Beautiful"

On the positive side of things, the Phillips / Price County area has Nature's geography and scenery that is as beautiful as you will see anywhere. The lakes, the back roads, and the Nature preserves really take you back to Nature. That's why you often hear people refer to Northern Wisconsin as "God's Country".

When you drive through the Phillips / Price County area, you are only seeing half of the picture. You really have to see the area from the back roads and the lakes and rivers to get the full perspective of what the area has to offer.

The majority of the German, Irish, Scandinavian, Czech, Italian, etc, population are good, hard working, down to earth, back to nature kinds of folks.

Most of the residents on the street will probably agree that Phillips / Price County just needs a few key changes in a few key positions as a course correction! "Out with the old, and in with the new!"

Yeah, my husband and I bought land in Rusk County, next to Price, and I am sure many would say the same thing. It was apparent to us as we explored around us that it was poorer than neighboring Chippewa, Barron or Sawyer counties. But, it is also a place you can get lost in, if that is what you are interested in.
From what we were told by locals in Bruce, the young people leave the area.
If there are no jobs in Price, I am sure it is the same way.

Default Never mind the wolves, beware certain species of man

The natural beauty of Phillips / Price County is as good as anywhere in Wisconsin.

But, beware the most dangerous species of animal located in this area. No, it isn't the growing wolf population; it is certain species of MANKIND.
The worst abusers are certain public officials and certain private sector managers. Without a doubt, these officials and managers appear to be totally disconnected from what is generally considered to be usual and customary business practices. These officials and managers think nothing of abusing their positions of power, and appear to be totally disconnected from reality. They act as if they are not held accountable to anyone!

The behind the scenes power players never run for public office, instead they put their puppets in positions of power and pull the appropriate strings. What a clique!

Most real estate is valued and assessed for tax purposes at a rate way over what current market conditions permit... except for the clique... their real estate is valued at market value.

All of this excess tax assessment is used to pay for too much bureaucracy. The bureaucracy has doubled in size and budget and the space it occupies since the new court house was built. Some public sector employees have retired from one government job and taken 1 or 2 more government jobs. Yes, that's right, double and triple dipping! Unbelievable!

Cost over-runs also consume the tax dollars of the hard working citizens. Example: the new county garage that was budgeted for $1,000,000 ended up costing $1,500,000. That's a 50% cost over run on a million dollar budgeted project!

If you're coming to this area to snowmobile, beware! Both public officials and private managers will want to dip their hands in your wallet!

Good Luck!

Default The 40 or 50 Club

Phillips and Price County don’t have a “400 Club”, they have a “40 or 50 Club”. These approximately 40 or 50 people would like to think that they know what’s best for the community. Generally their decisions are not what’s best for the community, but more so what’s best for them and their own personal goals agendas. Ultimately this is a very selfish position to take. This is a cold and closed group as a rule.

The social hierarchy is “The 40 or 50 Club”, then the public government sector, then everybody else. “The 40 or 50 Club” would like to think that the next layer of law enforcement and government exists for their own personal use and special interests. “The 40 or 50 Club” is made up of professional people: lawyers, judge, doctors, and influential executives and managers from the private sector.

Abuse of power is widespread, especially with those public and private sector individuals who have been in their positions for any appreciable length of time. Some of these public sector individuals have become way too comfortable in their positions, and if they were in the private sector, they would have been rotated out long ago. Some of these public sector individuals appear to have been placed here in this remote location to get them out of the mainstream since they can’t be fired.

If you need help with any kind of a legal issue, you need to go outside the boundaries of Phillips and Price County since the local resources stick together wrong or right!!!

Default Wish we did not have to live here

I agree with a lot that has been said. I just moved up to Park Falls last September. I am only aware of some plastic company in Phillips, which I understand was recently bought out. Completely agree with Philos, they are out of touch with the real world and true business sense or practices. The governmental workings or non-workings are embarrassing to say the least. We moved to Park Falls because of my husband's job. Fortunately, he works for a stable, privately owned company in Park Falls. I would say, but I don't want to give myself away if any locals read this. I moved from Waukesha county where I could find similar minded people. I have not found many of them here. I am having a very tough time.

And I completely agree with “Inciteful”; I think we are like minded and on the same wave length. We need to find a local forum friendly coffee shop to continue this forum locally.

The way to become well adjusted to life here in Price County is to ignore the World as you know it outside of the County lines; and what is generally considered to be “Usual and Customary”. By this time you will have experienced Cerebral Atrophy, and your brain will have shrunk to the point where it is rattling around in your skull.

A day trip to a neighboring community like Minocqua, Woodruff, St. Germaine, Eagle River or Rhinelander quickly reminds one of the more Upbeat, Open-minded, Enlightened, Positive Attitude, thinking that exists in most other more progressive and successful areas. It’s no wonder that Price County has always been one of the more economically depressed areas in the state.

This area needs more investigative reporting as was done by Channel 7 with regard to the previous Sheriff who refused offers of help to find a lost senior citizen who suffered from dementia.

Deputies have been known to follow citizens 5 miles or more right into the parking lots of their places of employment for NO PROBABLE CAUSE! There exists a plentiful supply of “Holier Than Thou” folks here who are quick to point the finger at others and to abuse the power of their positions to enlist law enforcement to support their positions. They seem to forget that when you point the finger at someone else, 3 fingers are pointing back at yourself!

Any public sector employee (local, state, federal) county board members, aldermen, should be required to attend regular professional career updates at the University of Wisconsin - WIPPS, “Wisconsin Institute for Public Policy and Service”. Hopefully this would sensitize them to the needs of their customers, the taxpaying public who pay for their salaries.

I sincerely believe that many of them don’t understand the concept of “public service” and “customer service”!

If you like Chicago Style Politics (re: the late gov blog), and corruption in high places; you will like it here.

For my part, morals, ethics, and integrity have always been the secret to my success.
