I'm getting ready to move and would like to get some feedback on the job outlook. I hear one of the factories in town might be closing?

My grandparents used to own a little resort in Phillips on Solberg Lake! I loved going there as a kid (and as an adult) I know it's beautiful there, grandma always called it God's country. All that is there is factory work, and I have had many relatives go through long periods of unemployment over the years. I don't know any of the current news or employment situation, but I just had to post when I saw Phillips...good memories!
Good Luck!

I lived in Phillips for 7 years before moving to Washington state. What in particular are you looking for? And which of the factories do you mean?

Phillips appears to be a nice little city by the lake on the surface, but you have to dig deeper. Just check out the list of citations issued that appear each week in the local news paper. The powers that be all appear to be members of the same "lodge" or "secret society". They are all busy scratching each other's back. If you have a consumer issue, there is no consumer protection in Phillips / Price County. Lots of Luck!!!

I don't really know, but I don't think there are a lot of factories in the area. I think the bigest was the Paper Mill up there that was shutting down or really reducing personell.
I would be wary of moving up there until you know the job market.

There are 2 factories in Phillips, WI. Be carefull, people get hired and fired on a regular basis. The paper mill in Parkfalls to the North of Phillips is now owned by the employees with some state help, and there was a rumor that it might be converted to an ethanol plant. This facility is over 100 years old.

I would have to agree. TO me it is the most inbreed portion of the state, but north of there it sure is beautiful, but colder than a witches hoo hoo!!!!. Good luck, but if you get a chance to go there before you move....go into the grocery store, and a couple of shops and a restauraunt and really look around, I think you will catch my drift.

Cutting through the Bull
I can think of at least 6 examples of people in positions of power in Phillips who are territorial empire builders; and this is a small town. Four of these people are business managers in the private sector, and two are managers in the public sector ie gov't where they have lifetime employment ie they can't be fired; but they should be. Two hold positions where they can have an unfavorable influence on, and can intimidate local law enforcement.
Apparently they think that they have "arrived" in their careers, and by golly they are going to drive a stake in the ground. They apparently have chosen to ignore the existence of a world outside of the City Limits / County Line; and to ignore what is considered "usual and customary" business practices. Some of their actions could definately qualify as an abuse of power.

my father in law grew up in price county and it is probably the biggest train wreck economically in the state and always has been since the decline of the logging industry. logging is still just about all they have. all i can say is if you have a choice, don't do it.
