Headed to Wausau
So... it looks like we will be headed to Wausau. Thank you everyone for the input earlier.
I was wondering if anyone has any input on how pet-friendly Wausau is. Is there a dog park... for example? We are also thinking of renting a house in the beginning until we are more familiar with the area. Is it terribly difficult to rent with pets?
I would appreciate any info.
Thanks!

There are several dog parks in the area---one in Wausau proper over at Marathon Park and another one---fenced and huge----over in the Schofield/Weston area just off of Rogan Lane. Then too, you should know that most of the other City of Wausau parks permit dogs to run free----you do need to keep your animal somewhat under control though-----not bothering other folks, etc.
I'm not sure what the rental situation is when a pet is also involved----susect it's very much a case-by-case type of situation.
From looking at an earlier posting of yours, another Italian Restaurant you'll want to check out is Carmelo's over on North Mountain Road (it's in the shadow of Rib Mountain).
Wausau is, all things considered, a nice place to live. We moved here 26 years ago coming from Milwaukee. Bet you'll like it here!

thank you!
Thank you! I was beginning to think that nobody in Wausau had pets!
We haven't started to look around, yet for housing.... With the prices so much lower than here, we might actually go ahead and buy a house (we were originally going to wait and see how things go....). Then we wouldn't have to worry about the pets. We shall see.
I think we might be headed out in April to take a look. I will make note of the restaurant, thanks! It will be hard leaving an area where I can easily get all my authentic Italian ingredients, but, hey, that's what the internet is for!
I am thrilled to hear about the abundance of dog parks. The kids will love that! I am betting, from everything I have read, that we will like living there.
Thanks again!

Here are the Dog Parks I know about:
Hazelwood Dog Park - 604 County Road J, Wausau
Weston Dog Park - Regent St (in Weston)
Rib Mountain State Park -4200 Park Road Wausau (We've always taken are dog up here and no one has ever said a thing)
Yards are generally big enough around here that people will just let the dogs out into the backyard. There's quite a few patches of woods around and plenty of state parks within driving difference.
One thing though - in my experience everyone has BIG dogs (labs, shepards, etc). The ankle biters aren't very popular. The reason for this is mainly the snow... little dogs just can't walk in it.
Good Luck and welcome to the area! I'm sure you'll love it!

ankle biters....
Don't worry! I think our Newfie will be able to walk in the snow! I'll tell my brother not to bring his Chihuahua to town (I don't really like it anyway....).
Thanks for all the info! It sounds great.

One thing I forgot to mention that most people don't understand when they arrive.... All the county roads in Wisconsin are named for letters - i.e. N, NN, J, F, etc, etc. It usually drives new people mad, so I figured I warn you
Oh! If you need to shop, head to NN in Wausau!

I think that my friend lives in a town in Ohio that does that.... It seemed kind of strange when I was sending her letters....
Thanks for the heads up. Is there any particular system to how they are named, like an east/west north/south thing?

Well every county just uses the alphabet. Where it gets confusing is if you are in say Marathon County (where Wausau is) County J will be a different road than the County J in Clark County (the county next door). Sometimes there's only a few miles difference. So it can be confusing. Though WDOT has been doing a better job "spacing" the road names out or calling roads J or JJ when they are in nextdoor counties.

hospitals and schools
Hello again....
I have been doing my research for our big move to Wausau.... Does anyone know which part of the city has the best schools. I checked some info sites, but there wasn't info on all the schools. Also... is there open registration, or are they strict about zoning and school attended?
I also wanted some hospital info.... Is Aspirus the big hospital in the area? Does it have a good reputation?
Thank you!
