Appleton also has one of the top charter schools in the nation. It is called Valley New School. People rave about the educational experience. Look into it. I heard that a lot of teachers in Neenah chose to retire. Layoffs seem to be par for the course at schools all over the US.

Hi Kate,
Thanks for the info. You know Appleton very well.
Yes, sadly layoffs are becoming more common these days.
Take care

Glad to help. I love my adopted state and try to help people out. When we lived out east, every year the school board said they were laying off people. They usually ended up only cutting a few jobs but the threat was always there.

Lifelong Appleton resident
I've lived in Appleton for 25 years (my whole life) and I just recently moved to Superior, WI, which is great, by the way, even though everyone says it sucks.
Appleton has no bad neighborhoods. I've visited (lived a month here or a month there) in several large cities: Philadelphia (2 months), Cincinnati (3 months), Phoenix (1 month), Los Angeles (4 months), etc. Those places have distinct areas that you'd want to avoid.
Appleton has none of this. I'm not too sure what other people have been saying but the only thing Appleton has for crime is petty small-time drug users and rich suburban kids that think they're "gangstas". There is a moderate sex offender problem I'm told, but I can't see people snatching up little kids. Maybe they do, I don't know.
I wouldn't be afraid to walk anywhere in Appleton at anytime of the day or night. Carrying a wallet full of cash. Appleton is one of the most policed cities I've ever been in, so yeah, it's safe. Not to say it will STAY safe. A lot of the unsavory element from Milwaukee/Chicago/Minneapolis has decided to move to Appleton now. They used to pick Green Bay or Oshkosh (which do have some bad areas). The crime could somewhat bad. Mostly, around downtown is older houses/apartments and as you get closer to the highways (41 or 441) construction tends to get newer (and more expensive.)
Hope that helps.

Appleton
Hi...I have lived in Appleton for 33 years. Our Police Dept., and education is one of the best in the states. The Crime here isn't as bad as how Jane has portrayed it to be!!LOL... If you avoid the downtown area you will find many quiet peaceful neighborhoods. I live in the Alicia park neighborhood just down the street from a heart Doctor and Congressman Kagen. Its an artsy fartsy area and I love it!! I have a three year old and from our house, its less than a 10 min. walk to Lutz, Pierce and Alicia park. By the river there are several million dollar homes but on average homes are around $200,000. You can rent a 3 bedroom home for $750 a month...Not bad if you ask me. Lol...
Best of luck to you Jane. In the future if quiet is what you are looking for, don't live by a bunch of bars. Seems simple to me!!

FYI...We have a jail attached to the Appleton Court house and many of the offenders are actually in jail but show up as Appleton's residents as a result. Avoid the downtown area and you will find many nice neighborhoods...

New to City-Data Forum
Hi Everyone,
I am new to this site. I actually stumbled on this site as I am researching Appleton, WI. I would really like to move to this Town but no nothing about it. How's the job market, housing market, is it a great place to live?
I currently live in Fife, WA and I'm sick and tired of being here.
I once lived in Madison, WI awhile back when I was about 4 yrs. old. I want to raise my kids in that same environment but with the way the economy is going everything is so pricy living here. I want to move to small town but don't know on how abouts to get there with limited income!
Any advice???
