I have lived in Appleton for a little over 5 years and I can tell you that Appleton is changing a lot. People are moving in from Milwaukee and they arn't the kind that you want as neighbors. It is happening sometimes subtly and sometimes it hits you right in the face. Anyway, it is still a nice family town with a great YMCA but there are those things that you don't like to see happening. As for myself personally, I will say that Appleton is a little too slow for me and I'm thinking of moving to a place near a big city(Milwaukee), but not in the city itself. Except maybe Tosa.
