Still tanning in Wisconsin?
In trivia related to my upcoming move back home (Sheboygan area) my cousin tells me that many, a lot, most? of the people are still trying on purpose to get a tan. I was very surprised. Here in the Northwest it is generally recognized how bad it is; skin cancers and wrinkles & other ugly sun damage stuff to skin. I'm curious to know what others see or experience. Thanks.

Unfortunately, where I live a lot of tanning places have sprung up. See quite a few women sporting a nice leather look in the middle of winter, and you can tell it's not from a recent vacation to Florida! Maybe a few folks see it as a way to beat the winter blues.

I can't tell if they are doing the salon bit or the bottle variety but you do see alot of tan folks!
I used to work at a barber shop that had the booths when they were first very popular in the 80's. I was always tan, rather obsessed with it. Of course, older and wiser I realize the bad side of it now.
My sisters are 68 and 67, me I'm 60 but many times when my oldest sister and I are together, people think we're twins. She is very fair, can't stand being warm, never was a sun bunny. Her face looks better than mine, plain and simple, I can blame my years of endless tanning. When I think of all the bad sun burns I've had, totally scares me.

Thanks to everyone. I guess us "whities"will just have to stick together! I too have sun damage other than the premature wrinkling from laying out in the sun etc. (Remember the iodine in baby oi mixture?) I have some really ugly read skin on my neck and upper chest. The dermatologist gave it some long name but in short she said it was cummulative sun damage. It looks like an ugly red rash and is visable even with an open necked shirt. If I ever thought I could fudge on my age a little the sun damage gives it away I think. Oh well.

yes, they still do tan here. I don't know as many that fake tan, but in the summer many are very dark.

Yes, I don't get it, but they do still tan heavily here. Gotta love that wrinkled, leather skin.

Out east we would laugh at the business the tanning salons did. Small towns had 3-4 tanning salons. People living in NH walking around with dark tans in January? And then bleach their teeth to an obnoxious shade of white. Yeah OK. And so many people had swimming pools and all summer they would be outside with no sunscreen. Skin cancer anyone? We knew a few people to had tanning beds in their houses too. My kids even know better. People considered it status to be dark.
I have fair skin so I never went without sunscreen once I was an adult. Haven't noticed it up in our neck of the woods either.

I forgot to add that I do love the Jergens lotion that does darken your skin. I like how it looks in summer. Nothing like the QT I used as a teen. The nice orange glow. Or baking outside with either baby oil or cocoa butter.
When we go home to Missouri for a visit the farmers are always baked to a crisp. Love when they are in church on Sunday and you can see the cap line across the neck.

OMGosh, I had forgotten about that greasy cocoa butter! That stuff was nasty and guaranteed a sunburn (at least if your as pale as I am!).
Kate, since you are also fair skinned, the Jergens actually gives you the look of a tan without streaking? I find that many of the self-tanners streak on my pure white skin but I haven't tried that one yet.
