Green Bay Neighborhood(s)
Hello Packerfans
Considering a move to NE WI, probably GB or maybe FRV.
What can you share about GB neighborhoods? I'm specifically interested in downtown area (webster, b'way, monroe - east of river). Could you recommend this area - or would you advice elsewhere in GB?
We're a younger family of four.

You might want to do a "search" on this forum as there are quite a few threads about Green Bay/Appleton, etc. as that is a popular area. If you've already tried that, sorry!
Good luck with your plans, I can't really help with Green Bay as I live over by the lake. I recently moved to Wisconsin from Illinois and I'm very happy here.
Green Bay has alot to offer, I head over that way when I need a "bigger" area fix, like a mall, Kohl's, etc.! I do hear Manitowoc is getting a Kohl's next year, good for me!

As far as the area near downtown there has been some changes just east of downtown with declining housing etc and some bad neighbors. Green Bay doesn't have any ghettos so to speak but has some areas on the fringe in the city. The far east side is growing has a lot of young families. Look for other threads as there is a group consensus as to the provincial nature of the locals to move forward. The downtown is gone as far as shopping for ever and was almost dead a few years ago. There is some condo and a few more offices now. If you like the outdoors you'll be fine. If you like the arts and interesting field trips for the kids you'll come up short and see everything in a week. You better support the Packers and don't even think of driving around or wearing another team logo and that's serious advice.

Hi Great Lakes Pirate!
I just moved to Green Bay with my husband last May-we've been here about a year now and we are really liking it. Friendly people and we survived the winter, so that is good!
Anyway, regarding neighborhoods. We live in Allouez, which is on the east side just south of Green Bay. The area of Allouez where we live has a lot of young families and young married couples. We are just a couple blocks from the Fox River trail and are able to take our dog or go for bike rides down the trail often in the spring and summer. And we are still very close to everything, which is nice.
I have also heard good things about Ashwaubenon (on the west side) and De Pere (which is about six miles south of Green Bay). As far as the actual Green Bay city limits, I'm not too familiar with the neighborhoods but when I asked about a year ago on this very forum, most people advised me to go outside of the city.
If you have any other questions, I will sure try to help. Good luck with your searching!

I've been lurking for about a year and decided today to join in. Green Bay is a descent city to live in, really there are no bad neighborhoods or hoods as you have in larger cities. I live about 4 blocks off of Webster in DePere, never had a problem, been there for 10 years. I've been in Green Bay since birth, which will be 41 years this year. If you have any specific questions, feel free to pm me. Rick

Check into the schools first.....downtown GB is rumored to have some troubles. DePere Area has best schools and safest area. Also check the National Sex Offender Registry... National Sex Offender Registry to see what are the safest areas. The area you are talking about is saturated with SO if you check the map. Hope that helps.

The one thing that often surprises people is just how conservative the Green Bay area is. It's a very wholesome, whitebread, Leave It To Beaver kind of place....with little exception.
That's the only thing I can think of that hasn't been mentioned.
(PS: Packer stuff is serious business in Green Bay. No joking around, sir. )

I totally agree. There isn't much room for anything "out of the box" and if you are not like everyone else then you will be an outcast. I have experienced it first hand. I wouldn't pick this place and hopefully we will be gone soon.

Wanted to mention one other thing....the downtown area you are talking about has a very nice historical area...beautiful homes etc. We did consider that area until we researched schools. You say you have children? I would strongly urge you to pick a residential area based on schools, and again De Pere is where I would go if I could choose again. Good luck if you decide to make the move....have you considered Appleton? If you can swing the commute, a much better place to live. Not as conservative; hence the university helps with that.

I lived and went to school in Green Bay before the military. I thought it was a great place to live. Big town, small attitude with a decent job market and great places to play bingo! :-)
