You also could check out Mukwonago. I grew up there and it really is a nice community with very good schools and churches.

Different county, wonderful community
Have you heard of or considered Elkhorn? It's a beautiful town with great schools, and it's not far at all. Probably not more than 20 minutes from the City of Waukesha. It's close to UW-Whitewater and Alpine Valley ski resort. Numerous lakes and some of the best dirt bike trails in the US in Kettle Moraine. Very quiet, peaceful and rural, yet over 5000 in the city itself and not far from anywhere: Madison, Oconomowoc, Waukesha, Milwaukee, Chicago all less than an hour away!

My daughter and family live in Hartland. Check it out - great place to live...and just a short drive to anything your heart desires.

What would be your criteria for a community? Would you like to live in a city, town, village, or farm? How far would you like to be from everything? How long would you like to keep your or your husband's commute?
My husband and I just started looking in Waukesha/New Berlin. Since he works downtown Milwaukee and I work in Menomonee Falls (maybe another village option for you?), Waukesha is the furthest that we're willing to move to because of the commute. But from what we've seen, the city seems to have the best value in the school system, and the taxes aren't that bad for the quality of life people seem to have (especially compared to Milwaukee Co. where we live now.) But we're not rural people...I'd like land and wooded lots, but I'm not willing to live in a small town after living in cities all my life.
So, it's all personal preference. Waukesha Co. seems to have the entire range from urban to rural. There doesn't seem to be very many "bad areas" crime-wise.

This might be a little unfair - I grew up in Brookfield as well and wouldn't ever call it "snobbish" - my parents still live in the same house they moved to over 40 years ago and I still love driving through the old neighborhood. (though things have of course changed a bit...)

Moving to Waukesha County
I'm moving to Waukesha County by the second week in September. I was there a couple of weeks ago. I liked Merton, Hartland, Delafield, Brookfield, and Oconomowoc was okay. The areas were nice--Oconomowoc is nice, but it was a bit swampy due to the heavy rains. I'm no expert on WI, but the areas I mentioned above were clean, the schools ar good, and there's a nice community feel to them.
I also went to Whitefish Bay and Shorewood in Milwaukee. They were both nice areas, but WFB was the better of the two. Shorewood is pretty close to some sketchy areas. These areas are very americana. Kids walk to school and there's shopping and eateries that you can walk to from time-to-time.
