Fishing 4 hours away from chicago
My boyfriend and I are looking into coming up north to Wisconsin sometime this summer to go fishing. We'd like to find a place about 4 hours away (will go further) where we can rent a cabin for the weekend and we can go fishing and hiking. Any idea's?
Thanks

Diane, I'd recommend Minocqua or Arbor Vitae, WI. There is many hiking trails up there as well.

Look at Door County too. Good fishing and nice state parks to hike around.

I totally spaced out Door County. I think Door County would probably be just as good for fishing as Minocqua Arbor Vitae.

Diane,
If you guys are willing to take a little trip, the Welcome to Wisconsin info center will be along the interstate just across the border from you. You will be able to find armloads of good vacation information so you can better plan and choose. Most of the vacation counties will have substantial glossy color booklets for you. In addition to the Vilas county and Door county mentioned above, look in to Marinnette county.
Equally distant from you as those, with great fishing and great hiking. In addition, Marinnette county has a number of waterfalls tumbling down from the highlands.

Where ever you decide to go PLEASE PLEASE clean up after yourselves.....Unfortunately in our area people from Chicago have the nasty reputation of making a HUGE mess, trashing our hunting, camping, fishing areas and then up and leaving town, coming back year after year and doing the same thing. I have family in and around Chicago so I'm not saying that ALL Chicago people do this but unfortunately a few "bad apples" have spoiled the bunch and have made it seem like all people from Chicago are this way. How much effort would it take to simply pick up their garbage?
The nice thing is tho is that you have the opportunity to come here...do the right thing and change that perspective and how people here view Chicago visitors. Good luck and have fun on your trip.

I'll second that football mom. Moving from Illinois to Wisconsin, I truly appreciate how clean Wisconsin is! I drove down this week and noticed the junk along side the road almost as soon as I crossed the state line to Illinois.
My mom raised us to be pick up after yourselves obsessive and I really notice when people don't. It was frustrating living in Waukegan having to pick up my yard every day because I lived on a busy street near a bus stop.
When I walk down to the lake, I take a bag with me. I don't collect much but a little with winter just being over. I can't pass by a bottle or can on the ground, bugs me.

I remember years ago, the welcome centers would have plastic bags that you would hang in your car and put the garbage in.
I am impressed at how many people I saw last weekend cleaning up the sides of the road.

What kind of fish are you looking to catch. We are planning on doing a lot of fishing this spring and summer. My husband likes to catch walleye but my son likes fishing for smaller fish like bluegills and crappies.
