I so miss it back there....I was born in Superior, dragged out to Wyoming at the tender age of 12...came back for college (well...to party at college, not really attend any classes! )....then moved back to Wyoming....
I'm in the process of talking my hubby into moving back there. He's only been out there during March weather (2003...it was 28 below)....and he LOVED it....but the logistics of moving the family is what is holding us back. I'd like to move back to the northern portion of the state (just because that's the portion I know....Superior, Danbury, Poplar, Rice Lake, Chetek)....and DH wants to live next to a large body of water...I think Lake Superior will suffice....
now if we could only sell this darned house in Wyoming!

I grew up in Wisconsin near the UP and lived as a kid in the summer in Door County during the hand picking seasons. I no longer live there, not only because I'm ex military and have lived around the world, but because I hate snow and cold! As a few have said, research before you relocate.

I post often, I've lived here less than a year and I resent the implication. I did research, I've lived in NE Illinois just miles from the border before moving here and was in Wisc. alot, not like I'd never been here.
I consider myself reasonably intelligent, capable of making choices and if you read my posts you will note I always say, research, do your homework, spend time in a town, don't just go on weekends once in awhile, etc.
Without being drawn in to others misery, some people need to get realistic.

I remember berries didn't think we would survive the winter. And if this was the worst WI winter in years it was no problem for us. I took a walk almost daily, we went cross country skiing, use my snow shoes a lot. We went to a lot of festivals and other events around WI. We enjoy being outside no matter what the weather.
We have been busy now with all the spring things. Gardening, fishing, I went hiking at Patison State Park today.
We knew what to look for when relocating and have no regrets. My husband has also helped a number of families relocate to WI and they are also doing just fine.

I had people here in TR ask me what are you going to do once it gets snowy and cold?
Excuse me, Waukegan is right on the lakeshore, I already knew about, fog, damp days, the good old "cooler near the lake" expression! I didn't move to TR because I thought the weather would be wonderful! I moved because I liked the area, I've always lived near the lake, and Wisconsin has alot more to offer me than Illinois.
No matter what the old timers here think, I researched and moved here for very good reasons and intend to stay.

It's funny. Sometimes newer residents know more about the state than those who lived here their whole lives. People who live in a place don't always spend the time learning about it or the different historical/entertainment opportunities that exist. Having lived here my whole life I find new resident posts to be enlightening and sometimes gives me ideas for vacations to towns I hadn't really known much about.

Dea, That's the way I feel. I love hearing about things that people explore and it gives me ideas of what I can do in my free time. I think for the most part we all try and stay positive.

We lived in upstate New York and New Hampshire so Wisconsin, snow and cold was nothing new to us. In fact there is probably less snow here then there is out east. So winter was not a shock or a challenge to us.
I also lived in Iowa and Illinois and Missouri so humid weather is also nothing I haven't experienced.
We enjoy exploring new areas. So I think exploring all the areas of Wisconsin let's us give people some ideas of where to go and see. People who lived here a long time also become complacent and don't bother to check out area festivals, concerts etc.

The relocation assistance people lied!
My wife and I move to Kenosha 2 yrs ago. My job relocated us from Maryland. We looked over a LOT of pamphlets, fliers, etc about how great Kenosha county was and how if we bought a house downtown on the lake we would just love it. Lies.
Here's what I have found to be the truth (as I see it, of course):
Kenosha (only town I've lived in):
1. Plauged with alcoholics and drunk drivers.
2. Taxes are retarded. I pay twice what we did in MD for half the house.
3. Where are the snowplows? I live right downtown, and they don't even plow our street!
4. Told the people were "Nice, mid-western" folk. I guess that means people who mistreat their children, don't take care of their house/lawn, drink and do drugs and create a general nuisance, and have the cops over for a few laughs 2 or 3 times a week.
5. Cops? We called them because on the fourth of July our neighbors party spilled over into our yard, and there were 6 drunk guys fighting in my back yard. I was told by the 911 DISPATCHER that the cops were, and I QUOTE, "too busy to handle it".
6. The roads are the worst in the United States. Case closed.
7. It is impossible to conduct any type of business transaction during deer season or a Packers game.
8. Betting on whether or not your flight will actually leave Milwaukee between November and March should be a new gambling business.
I travel all over the US for work, and I've been to a LOT of places. Wisconsin (at least the SE corner) sucks. Fortunately, we've been paroled! I told my boss that either the company would move me away from here, or I would find another employer. They agreed, and we're moving this summer.
I'm glad the people here who like this area are happy here. But for anyone who is thinking of relocating, please do a lot more research than I did and save youself a lot of time and money. This state and it's real estate people will do whatever they can to suck you into paying their socialist-level taxes, and you won't get a bit of service out of them.
One more thing: Don't eat sushi in Wisconsin. Trust me.
