In many ways, northern Wisconsin has always been a "tourist" state, the tourists have just changed. Wealthy families from the Twin Cities and Chicago have long had estates in the northwoods (along with a few gangsters...). Areas like Hayward have also long catered to the tourists, even in the 20s. As for the middle of the state, blame the strange milk pricing for the loss of the family farm. When they started dying out in the late 70s and 80s, cities found tourism an easy money-booster, as it was hard to convince industry to locate in small, rural towns away from major routes of travel (the 4-lane Hwy. 29 hasn't been around that long).
With that said, it does suck dealing with tourists, or worse yet, cabin people. I remember being around some particular annoying cabin boys in high school. My friends cut the visit short as they saw my anger rise visably .

I moved to Wisconsin in November 07. The cost of living is much better than where I'm from. But it is so backwoods and behind the times. I feel like I'm living in the twilight zone. I hate the weather, the storms, the HUMIDITY!!! The mosquitos are terrible and the food...well....I can't say I've had a good meal at a restaurant since I've been here. Everyone seems to be happy with the food but it seems they don't know what they are missing elsewhere.
If you are a beer drinker or an alcoholic you will be in good company. They have more Driving while Intoxicated Statistically than any other state in the US. Drinking is socially the norm here.
Not a health concious environment!

Wow, Someone is negative. Stop being a pansy and move out. Nobody says we live in a communist country and you have to stay put. I'm sorry but if your going to put our state down and move to your so called utopia then go ahead. The humidity? Your kidding right, Ohhh jeeze we have a week of humidity and that's considered bad. Not a health concious environment? Madison just won an award for best teeth in the U.S. Our state has lots of biotechnology as well. Plus Madison has one of the highest concentrations of PHD educated people in the U.S.

Umm, less than a year in Wisconsin and you've figured it all out, hey? Cuz nobody else in any other state in this country drinks beer, has crappy weather, storms or humidity. Okay then.
For the record, I've lived here all my life. The alcoholics I know reside in other states. Though WI does have a reputation for lots of drinking, not every person here does that, myself included. As for the food, perhaps you should expand your horizons a bit, get out and try some other places. The humidity can be bad for very brief periods but it's certainly not any everyday occurrence.
Gotta run, need to get my daily dose of beer and cheese curds.

Exactly! Great Post wigirl920! I know plenty of people who don't consume alcohol and not everyone eats cheese as Wigirl said.

You know Indigo, your complaining really just reflects back upon you. There are countless other threads here where Wisconsin immigrants have expressed their delight at discovering the states variety. In summary, you are not trying.

I think that as long as Wisconsin is part of the United States it will always be known for beer and cheese; it just seems there is no getting around it. I've been told that people on the coasts really consider the midwest to not even exist.True, there are a lot of people who consume alcohol here but on the other hand I know a lot that don't even touch it!! Just some thoughts on the subject.
