Minority Couple: Contemplating moving to Price County
My wife and I are contemplating a move to Price County. We are both educated professionals looking to enjoy the open outdoors of Wisconsin, but we have notice that the minority population in the area is next to nil. We are seeking honest and forthright comments that will help us make an informative and wise decision. Thanks…

Moving To Wisconsin
I was born and raised in Wisconsin. I married my wife, who is from the south, and move dto North Carolina a few years ago. Although the majority of my experiences come from residing in the south eastern aprt of the state, as a child I visited the upper western part of the state and went to college in the same area.
Wisconsin has a very low minority population. I you aren't living in Milwaukee, Racine, Kenosha or Green bay Wisconsin; you won't see many people of color in the state. Even Madision (University of Wisconsin) has a low minority population.
Price county is hours away from cities that have significant minority population. Personally, I would be miserable in that area because of its lack of diversity.

minorities up north
I am one half of a mixed family in Milwaukee. My estimation of the racial climate in Wisconsin is that it probably could not be worse anywhere. We are the most segregated state in the US. I have family, indians, who grew up on the res in Sawyer County, where indians were commonly referred to as (forgive me) "forest ******s".
On the other hand, you may become the token of the community, whose acceptance demonstrates to the world how open minded they are, because they then would all have a "nice black family" they could claim they don't hate. Just don't have a reunion.
Good Luck.

My grandparents lived in Price county throughout my childhood and we visited alot and spent a few summers up there until they passed away a few years ago...I don't think in all the times I was there I saw a single non-white person, and from what I have seen of my own relatives, it is a very small minded area. And putting aside any racial issues, I really don't know how well a highly educated family would do there, the area where my grandparents were was almost all factory work or blue collar type jobs (Let me say before I offend someone, there is absolutely nothing wrong with that kind of work, my parents didn't go to college and have worked physically hard all their lives and I have nothing but respect for them and what they have done for themselves and me) but my point is, I don't know how well you would fit in (or what you plan on doing there for that matter). I guess what I am trying to say is it was a very small town feel with a very small town attitude.
I truly hope I have not offended anyone here, but I tried to be PC and sensitive in my wording to get my point across without sounding like I am judging anyone.
Just my two cents about what I remember in all my time there.

Thanks
Thanks for your responses and even though there were only three of them, they were both informative and honest. We appreciated the delicacy of your answers and have decided that it might not be feasible or rational to move to Northern Wisconsin.

Dear Khind - have you considered Kentucky? The area just outside of Louisville, headed up I-71 , is a wonderful country area, but still close to ammenities and culture.
Search the Prospect, Lyndon areas, and also LaGrange. From the east end of Louisville until you pass LaGrange, you will find the population to be comprised mainly of doctors, lawyers and all professionals in between - and housing in many areas is reasonably priced.
There are gated communities in that area, especially directly on the river with docks at each home - but you will find the range of home possibilities to be accomodating to most.
The draw to the area is the diversity and the ability to drive a few minutes in one direction and be in the country, few minutes in the other and have the city at your fingertips.
Google Louisville Metro - you should find much info there. I live south of Louisville, closer to Elizabethtown - which is also a nice city of diversity. There are, however not as many cultural events, but the people 'quality ' is still outstanding.
And...Kentucky is not as cold in the winter as Wisconsin, but probably much more gray sky!
Happy Home Hunting, and, come visit this spring to see what you think! ( I would say come on down, but with our weather, you may be trapped in a snow storm one day or a deluge of rain the next. Favorite state saying "if you don't like the weather, stick around a few minutes, it will change!)

Madison actually has a much larger minority population than kenosha or racine, its just that all of the minorities are on the south and east sides. many minorities have come to madison since 2000, so the 2000 census study demographics arent accurate by a longshot anymore.

Rusk County has a mix not a large minority population but has one. The jobs are not greatest in the world though.Anyone ever hear of MR RIBS BBQ sauce? The man who made it was from the area and people treated him no differently than anyone else.Maybe our area is color blind and just see people for who they are not what nationality.

Not everyone is narrow minded...
I live in a very small town in central wi, pop. 1500. We seem to have a diverse mix here. Hispanics, African American, Indian, Mhong, so forth. It seems that my neighbors don't look at the color of your skin, it's who you are. Be nice to them and they will be nice to you. PERIOD!

I moved from Price co wisconsin. Very Very wierd bunch. Born and raised there(50) years. I always tried to figure it out whats wrong with the place. Very sugar coated friendly. I seen people move in from cities and they bend over (suck up) backwards for them Till they make a wave or stand up for an issue then look out your mud and they will make your life a living hell. Big Big clicks. believe me I know I was one of these people and when I decided this is not right I was Blackballed and ridiculled. Now I was a local gone bad. Being a minority Iam sure you will be their little showcase family for them. Its really sad, maybe its the long winters and they have mental problems. Maybe if your a phychiatrist you would have some work.(Ha Ha)
