So I am visiting from Texas up near the Bayfield/ Ashland area and have noticed that a lot of vehicles have some serious rust on the bottom and sides. What is this from?

I wonder if it's from the salt they put on the roads during the winter months.

I hear rust is caused from oxygen, so it's probably caused by oxygen reacting with cheap asian metal..saw it everywhere when I ived in Florida

Salt and water and ice. It's almost inevitable to get some rust if you have a vehicle in Wisconsin. It takes a while... doesn't happen overnight, thankfully. And I think vehicles have better finishes on them than they used to. But yeah, one of the side effects of winter in Wisconsin. As soon as we get winter storms, the roads get plowed, sanded, and/or salted in most places.

In the Bayfield area it gets pretty ice-covered, so the roads really get salted regularly. You're going to see a lot of vehicles with rust. No big bugs, though!

It is mostly from salt in winter on roads but just get your car washed at a good car wash 2-3 times in winter and you will be fine. Have a 14 year old car and it has no rust whatsoever. Some people do nothing and they may or may not get rust.

It's salt used for melting snow and it doesn't discriminate where the metal comes from. More of the metal than you might think is actually made here in the U.S. still, even much of what goes into Asian-brand cars assembled here.
Agree on the ocean air. I once bought a car from Hawaii that had a bunch of rust. Was kind of surprised by that.
Modern cars generally do better than the old ones, and a lot depends on the brand and how well it's been taken care of.

Yes salt.

If you can still find old cars from the 60s sitting in fields you'll notice if they died with low miles they only have the road usage rust spots.

50 years of snow and rain doesn't do much anything to the still factory painted areas.
