Devil's Lake State Park for kids?
I haven't been to DLSP in over 10 years. I would like to take my kids hiking, they are 7 and 4. Has anyone taken their kids there to hike?
I want to take them to the Dells also, but I don't want to do all the commercial stuff all day, so I figured hiking might fit the bill

We took our kids camping and hiking at Devils Lake when they were little and they loved it. There is a variety of trails with different degrees of difficulty. We also like Mirror Lake near the Dells too.

It's great. Trail difficulty varies. There are many trails kids would do well. Your seven year old could probably do the most difficult trails, but it will be tough/tougher for your four year old. However, there are many trails that are easy. Also, there's a beach for swimming, canoe and kayak rental, a small gift shop...
I would recommend it for the day. If you don't want to stay all day you could go to the Circus World Museum in Baraboo.

When I lived in Wisconsin, people contracting something called "swimmer's itch" was the thing I most remember about Devil's Lake. You might want to look into whether that's still an issue there before you make plans to head for the lake and go swimming.

I think that, if you use caution, it can be fun for kids. However, it seems that every year someone dies from a fall there and there are certainly places there that are not safe for kids to be climbing around.

As of right now the park is closed indefenatly I believe because of the recent flooding. Please be sure to check before taking a days drive only to be very disappointed.

Thanks, everyone for your help! I'll probably take them there in August before school starts.

The swimmers itch occured because of the lack of flow in the lake, I believe. They did make a creek/ditch on the SW portion of the park that allows some water flowage to occur. I guess a shower after swimming would do the trick as well.
Enjoy the park! There is many beautiful vistas there.
