Other recommendations (I think I already made them in a similar thread by the same OP in an Illinois forum): Minocqua and Hayward.

Just to the south of Door County you will find the city of Algoma - www.algoma.org - if you were interested. Small town of about 3,500 on the shores of Lake Michigan. Much cooler than other places in the summer :-)
As for Door County, I think most people covered it.....yes, there are very expensive homes & properties there, but there are plenty of others that are not. The city of Sturgeon Bay itself offers lots of options. I can't find the figures right now, but the population in Door County either triples or quadruples in the summer months. That's not even counting the day-trippers or those who take just regular vacations there (as opposed to those who stay for an extended period of time). Traffic can be horrendous at times as you head further north, but as long as you're patient...it's not so bad. As someone who used to live near there, I can tell you that a lot of the locals will avoid the area in the summertime, from Memorial Day through Labor Day. Sturgeon Bay itself isn't so bad, but the further north you go, the more "touristy" it is. As someone else commented, it's busy in the summer, but pretty dead in the winter.
You won't find a lot of "big business" in the Door County area....no big shopping malls, no huge stores. If memory serves, the only bigger chain stores are in Sturgeon Bay - Wal Mart, Target & Younkers. (I think that's all....someone correct me if I'm wrong). Some people might not like that, but I personally think it adds to the flavor of the county. There are some smaller strip malls, one for sure in Sturgeon Bay and possibly some further north. Perhaps others can fill you in on that. There is definitely plenty to do, though, and you are within a decent driving distance of Green Bay if you want to do mega-shopping.
All things considered.....I think you'd be very happy with Door County.

Door County
Yes, it is charming -- I love Fish Creek and Bailey's Harbor. During the off-season, you might have a tough time finding a job, but Sturgeon Bay is so close with perhaps more opportunities. I'd seriously look into renting -- wherever you move. I appreciate the advantages of a smaller town, too. The Lake Wisconsin area is lovely, and towns such as Sauk City aren't too bad. Germantown or Prairie du Chien might also be worth checking out.

peninsula's
Hi there, just wanted to clue you in from somebody who has lived in Door County and then moved to the UP of Michigan and now lives on the Keweenaw Peninsula....Door County is wonderful! Very picturesque and mild weather. But if you are looking for a more natural experience, check out the Keweenaw Peninsula of Upper Michigan. The homes here are still affordable (lake front is now out of the question), and jobs are making a comeback Lake Superior is just as pretty as Lake Michigan

No nanannie,
I didn't move (
With the housing market the way it is ........... I just didn't want to give my home away ($$$) so I am still here, going to Door County from time to time for the day and coming back home .....
When I started this thread, I didn't know what was around the corner with the real estate market. Now everyone knows and I really don't know how many people moved.
Not to mention the job situation which got so bad lately.

Northern Door County Doesn't Die!
I live in Northern Door County (Fish Creek) year 'round. We do not curl up and die in the winter. However, we do kick back and relax, and enjoy the beauty, quiet and the people in these communities. I have been here many years, and would be happy to assist in and information you are looking for!
