Default What is the biggest Mis-Conception/stereotype of Wisconsin?

I wasn't sure how to label the title so.....

Any ways whether it be geography, friendliness of citizens here, cost of living etc.

What do you think out of state residents or those who have never been to our beautiful state automatically stereotype us for? I think most people automatically assume that we are all huge Packer fans or we only drink beer and eat cheese. Many think our state is only farms and flat land.

I support the packers just as much as I support any other Wisconsin team.

Not everyone here drinks and eats cheese all the time! I don't know to many people who eat alot of cheese period. I eat yogurt instead.

Our landscape here is so understated just as the rest of the midwest is.

Wisconsin barely has any flat areas. The the eastern portion we have Moraines. To the Western Portion we have coulees and valleys. To north we have highlands with sandy grounds that make for crystal clear lakes and many coniferous forests.

So to those who have never been here check Wisconsin out!

Door County, Wisconsin Dells, Spring Green, Minocqua, La Crosse. All cities with some touristy flair. Maybe not so much Spring Green.

That its boring. We're boring, the landscape is boring... boring, boring boring--what--there is a state called Wisconsin? You know, that type of thing.

Of course, it isn't, but I'm actually fine with people thinking so. Oh, and the whole terrain thing--yes, Wisconsin isn't flat, I've seen some pretty flat places, but you start to travel and you realize how small the topography really is...

My girlfriend is a native of Seattle and constantly rips Wisconsin. She almost had a a heart attack when I took her to her first Brat Fest. Her reaction? "Are you kidding me? They have a festival for BRATS?" She likes to make fun of the amount of cheese and dairy made here. The lack of rain, mountains and a good cup of coffee (which there seems to be plenty of in Seattle.)

The ones that I heard were mostly about the weather ("You're going to die come winter!"), that the people are standoffish and that it's boring.

I'll admit that this last winter - our first out here - was a bit more than we were expecting but it wasn't THAT bad. The people have been wonderful so far. It hasn't seemed any more or less boring than the Seattle/Tacoma area yet but we're mostly homebodies anyway so we don't live for the nightlife like some people.

BTW, finding a good cup of coffee in Seattle can be seriously difficult! Most of the garbage that you find is the Starbuck$/SBC/Tully's burned and bitter sludge. Finding a cup of that stuff is simple back there - there were 2 Starbuck$, 1 Tully's and 1 SBC within a 1 block radius of the office I worked at in Seattle and two independent espresso joints as well. It's popular as an antidote to the seriously depressing weather - after drinking a cup of that stuff even a cloudy day is looking up!

I agree that Seattle has to have coffee to talk about because who wants the weather out there! Starbucks is the most overrated chain I've ever seen in my life, never darken their door step unless I'm with someone who insists we go there.

Everyone went on to me about moving to Wisconsin and the weather, living in NE Illinois all my life, not that big of a difference. This past winter was more like normal, which for 2 or 3 yrs. we didn't really have memorable winter weather. No matter where you live, every area of the US has some sort of weather as its claim to fame but people love to label the midwest about our horrible winters.

I'll take a crisp, sunny winter day anytime over cloudy, damp and rainy. I'm not a weather driven personality but endless damp and cloudy days can get on my nerves. We get spells of fog here in Two Rivers, when Manitowoc (right next door) is totally sunny. Kind of eerie but I love that fog horn!

"America's Friggin' Dairlyand"

The state is ignorant for continually portraying this imagery on coins, license plates, and whatever else they can find. There are so many things about Wisconsin that are appealing to visitors and vacationers and potential investors, yet many people outside of Wisconsin don't know the first thing about them. I respect the economic forces of the farm and dairy industry, but one would think that the state should be known for something a little more desirable.

Actually WI was just named as the heaviest-drinking state in the union. Click here: State of Drinking | Postcrescent.com | Appleton Post-Crescent
