Must say this thread is entertaining, since I spent the first 3 years of my teaching career in a small town north of Owen and remember competing with Owen-Withee HS about 30 years age. I think Owen also had a state mental hospital; I heard a lot of students tell someone that they'd gonna get sent to Owen when they acted like they're nuts.
What small town North of Owen?

I’m still here for now. It made me smile to see this post active again. Wow, it certainly has been a long time. I do live in Owen and I still love the small town life but all my children are gone now so my house is for sale and I will move to Colby, WI soon to be closer to my grandchildren. I miss seeing posts by homebrew and often wonder what happened to him. It’s funny to see the post saying it was like finding old letters in an attic. One of the main reasons I like Owen is because there are so many people that still remember and talk about their lives in the old days. I’m a bartender and the stories I hear should all be written down, they’re amazing. Maybe homebrew will see the post and respond too.

Default Owen WI should be moved to Maine...

My fiance and I were discussing this recently, after a freak snowstorm the Friday before Mother's Day left just enough ice on the front steps that I slipped, resulting in a fractured ankle (minor, the severe sprain that went with it was another matter), which led to the crutch slipping 13 days later on the living room floor, which sent to to ER for a CAT scan for a skull fracture (negative, but bills totaling $4000 and NO health insurance )... well, that 13 days led to a detailed description of the spooky stuff I recall from growing up 3 miles north of Owen and we (fiance and I) concluded that Owen is a small town straight out of a Stephen King novel (e.g. It) AND we decided Owen should be moved to Maine. Makes having a lunatic asylum (still used for dementia patients) here make more sense, um?

I would be VERY interested in any stories anyone from the Owen/Clark County area would like to share here of their own weird, even supernatural, experiences in this area. If you chance on this post and know where to re-post this request on the huge internet to direct people here to share such stories please do so.

This post-code obviously appears very similar to your zip-code (54460) to the code-reading machines used by US Mail - I've arrived at this conclusion because my cousin in Boston regularly sends me snail-mail letters which take maybe 3 months to arrive, instead of the 3 days his mail used to take to reach me from California. All these tardy letters reach me in really beaten-up envelopes with Owen WI 54460 postmarks on the back, which tells me they have done the rounds of Wisconsin a few times before they get to Owen SA.
I don't mind too much, because my cousin is usually telling me stuff I already heard from other members of our spread-out family, and it has the added advantage of making me feel at least a little part of Owen WI, where there is probably news I haven't heard !
Feel free to PM me and tell me a bit about yourselves - if you'll take the time to do so, I'll sure take the time to reply !
Hi there, Homebrew-- I recently moved to a small farmette about 6 miles from Owen, WI. I notice that your post dates from 2007, and it is now 2011. Are you still out there in Australia? Are you still interested in Owen, Wisconsin? I am now a reporter for the local newspaper, the O-W Enterprise. The paper does not have a web site, but I could certainly e-mail you copies of my stories. Let me know if you still have an interest.

Very interesting to read all of this and surprised it has been 9 years since it started. I definitely recognize some of you by your stories and your big move from Arizona, notmuch69. To those that consider Owen dumb or dying I would just remind them that beauty is in the eye of the beholder. I grew up in a bigger city and certainly have my fond memories but Owen has been home for 17 years and will likely remain my home. I hope to keep up with this thread if it should pick up again, the stories are certainly interesting. Anybody out there like honey??
