The judicial system....IMO shouldn't allow dangerous criminals to have representation, but then, that's me. If someone borrowed something you paid for, wouldn't you want it returned and if it was destroyed or lost, wouldn't you want to be compensated for it or better yet, if someone borrowed your money and didn't pay you back, you'd be in small claims court getting it back right?
It's all about "when you got your library card, you promised to return the book/video/cd by the due date and you knew that if it was late, you'd be fined or would have to pay for replacement"
This is probably why society takes what is offered to them for granted
