Default Rent or Buy

I'm moving my family to Middleton and was hoping some of you that are familiar with the area could give me some suggestions. Would it be better to purchase, rent or commute from Madison or surrounding areas? I'm coming from Fond du Lac where my mortgage payment is $650 (including taxes). I realize I won't find a place to rent for that - Help!

Middleton is one of the most expensive places to live around Madison. If you have an economy car & don't mind the commute, then I'd live outside of Madison. Do the calculations & see what's best. I'm assuming you're working in Middleton, so it'd be easy to live in a rural western area outside Madison.

Buying a house is often overrated. Consider these points.

How long will you live in the area? Some say you need to at least stay 5 years, some 15 years. Shorter than that, it's better to rent. Realtor fees, cleaning, buying new stuff for the house, all add up.

Should be debt free

Able to buy a house that costs 30% or less of paycheck.

job with solid future

Decent down payment 3 - 10%

Buy as little house as you can be satisfied with

Don't spend money you don't have & don't count on future anticipated earnings. Be careful.
